Ndamukong Suh Comes In At No. 4 On Most Disliked Athletes List

A year ago, after putting together an outstanding first season in the NFL, Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was considered one of the most popular athletes in the NFL. Now, however, after all of the talk about him being a dirty player and his Thanksgiving stomp, Suh has become one of the most disliked American athletes, according to a survey from Nielsen and E-Poll Market Research.

Specifically, Suh is considered the fourth-most disliked athlete in the United States, according to this survey. As noted in the write-up for the survey, fans have done a 180 in regards to Suh. In a survey about the most liked NFL players that apparently came out only four months ago, he actually came in first. Now, however, he has risen to the top of the most disliked list.

"He went from being so popular to being a pariah in one season," says Master. The good news for Suh is that he’s a young player who can shake off a mistake if he keeps it clean from now on.

The top three athletes on the most disliked list were Mike Vick, Tiger Woods and Plaxico Burress.

How is Big Ben not ranked higher?

Did you guys see the size of that chicken?

by studmo on Feb 11, 2012 11:00 AM EST reply actions

Because what he did was not considered a big deal by a lot of people. Sad, but true IMO.

And it was more than a few months in the past. Look, I think Ben got away with assault, rape, whatever you want to call it, but he never even had a trial on what he did so a lot of people are willing to believe the accusations were false or that the woman “asked for it”.

As for Vick, dog lovers have long memories and he will never be forgiven by a large number of fans. His crimes will keep haunting him on polls of this kind forever.

As for Suh? This poll just reinforces to me how stupid and easily manipulated people are. He went form being one of the most popular players to one of the most disliked in a year? For what? A stomp on Thanksgiving? Rough play? The way he handled the resultant suspension and the media hissy fit? Who knows? And frankly, I don’t care.

"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!

You want to know what people dislike more than dirty players

They dislike fake.

Suh spent his first season nurturing a public image of a hard working “one the edge” well spoken player. He pushed this image and reveled in it. Then in a fit of hissy, he stomped on another player. Dumb. Then he tried to sell it to the public that it was not intentional. When everyone on the planet knew better.

He comes off fake and Americans hate fake.

I am not so sure.

Plax did his time, so did vick.

I have no feelings on Plax. Vick, I just want him to disappear, forever. I loath him and always will.

This is more complex than criminal changes vs exceptionally moronic actions on a football field.

Are you suggesting Suh didn't "do his time"?

He missed two games, two game checks, and that’s not even going into all the crap he had to deal with and is still dealing with from the media. This very list is another example. Just cause he didn’t go to jail? No, Suh most certainly “did his time”. Just cause it’s Goodell and not some judge handing out the (official) punishment, that doesn’t make it any less valid, IMO.

Vick is higher than Suh anyway on the list so that’s pretty much a non-issue.

As for Plax. To be honest I have no problem with him. I think he’s stupid, but I’m not about to hate a dude ‘cause he’s stupid. Do I like him more than Suh? No way. I would take one flubbed press conference over ANYTHING that could get you put in jail every single time.

I think Suh is smart. I think he’s trying his best. I honestly do. I think the press conference was a wake up call, I think his ego was telling him he can do or say anything and get away with it. (Let’s face it, Suh has been tremendously successful) Hopefully a little dose of reality will get him pointed in the right direction.

First of all,
My reaction on Thursday was unacceptable,

Seems like he was admitting a mistake to me. You can go ahead and believe what you want, but I personally am %100 sure Suh knows he screwed up here, and knows he needs to be careful not to do it again in the future. (He has been squeaky clean since he came back from the suspension)

Second of all, punishments are not based on personal growth, they are based on rules/laws and precedent. The fact is, Suh’s suspension was worse than any other involving a play that did not result in an injury. That might not be enough for you. But it sure is for me. What Suh learned is irrelevant. You don’t have to see a parole board when the entirity of your senetance is up. You just get out.

Sorry I totally don’t agree with you here, Josh. At least with the “doing his time” thing. Everybody we’re talking about has done whatever governing body deemed to be appropriate punishment and should thus be considered to have done their time.

BTW, when did Plaxico prove he learned his lesson enough to make you list him?

We will agree to disagree

Everything he says and does is for image repair. He has not come across to me as genuine in any comment he has made and I have been watching.

These are the actions of an entitled athlete who believes he owes nothing to anyone. He will learn his lesson eventually.

Plax is just an idiot. I do not care about him good or bad. I talked about him earlier in response to someone else bringing him up.

As for Suh: yeah, he’s fake. No doubt about that. I kind of think of him as the LeBron James of football. Cares a lot about his “brand” and how people perceive him. I guess that shouldn’t surprised anyone knowing he has a degree in Construction Management (where half the classes are about cost efficiency and how to make/save money). Either way, if he produces, I don’t care what his image is like with the public, so long as he stays off the bong and keeps his little man limited to consenting women.

From a couple of different sources they say that there are about 240 million dogs and cats in the US. My next pet will be from an animal shelter.

Fact of the matter is, for many Americans who don’t follow football, the Thanksgiving Day game is one of the very few in thye year that they’ll even watch. Makes sense that the large scary man who stomped the poor guy from the America’s new “America’s Team” would be most reviled. I am not invested in him as a player

That is it. He is nothing more than one of our DTs to me. I believe he will run to the biggest contract his first opportunity and that is his right. Because of this belief, I do not care what people think of him because he is basically a rented player for our team right now.

I am invested in very few players really. CJ is one of them. It might sounds weird but MoMo is another one of them and I expect him to be moving along very soon. Stafford is growing on me, I just need to see another year or two of solid play that does not end on the IR before I am completely sold on him.

We’ll see on Suh. It’s three years away. Truth is, I like Suh.

I don’t hate him because he’s trying to make every dollar he can. I don’t hate him for the stomp. I don’t hate him for being “fake” at the press conference. (EVERYBODY is fake during press conferences. If you’re not, you’re not doing it right. That’s PR.) No doubt he screwed up, but he’s young. He made a mistake. People make mistakes. just for fun if we are talking our fav current guys.....

The 4 you listed are great choices and I love Delmas and Nate as well. I think Titus will really develop next year. His start was slow but you could kind of see him starting to figure things out as the season wore on. I think he has some real potential to be someone very important to the team next year. I am hoping for big things from him next year.

One of my favs is Kevin Smith. Especially after reading that front page article. How many guys have the loyalty to a team that has already cut them once? Guy wants to be a Lion and I respect that a lot even though he probably knows he wouldnt be the #1 or #2 guy coming into the season. Just a great team guy.

They did it for Savy, they did it for Horton, they did it for each other, they did it for us. I give you the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions....The Boston Bruins!!

my list was more about who I am most emotionally involved with as a Lion

That is, who would I be extra upset about losing. I guess there is a lot of overlap on “fav current guys” though there is a subtle difference.

I agree about K-smoove. His heart was always strong and reliable. Unfortunately his body was not as much. To be honest, while I love Smith, he doesn’t go on my list, though I can definitely see why you might put him on yours.

The Delmas choice comes from the niners game I was at this season. Friend of mine were down by the field for warm ups and he came over to say hi to someone in the stands and my buddy had a Delmas jersey on so Delmas stops for a pic then disappears for a bit and come back and tosses a pair of gloves up to my buddy. Stuff like that goes a long way IMO.

Yup, but until he proves this last season was the norm (16 games) I am not sold on him. All those great attributes do not mean a damn thing if the player is on the sideline. One full season out of three does not make a great player or a team leader.

Just some food for thought

1 Drew Brees New Orleans Saints 5,476
2 Tom Brady New England Patriots 5,235
3 Dan Marino Miami Dolphins 5,084 1984
4 Drew Brees New Orleans Saints 5,069
5 Matthew Stafford Detroit Lions 5,038

Those are the only QB’s in the leagues history to throw for 5,000 yards. I am not saying Stafford is the greatest ever or is HOF worthy by any means but that is some pretty good company considering its his first full season!! You can argue the kids not durable (i am sure we all hope he proves that wrong as well) but you can not argue he has the ability.

As for the leadership (or as I so poorly spelled leafership before) that is nothing that we can measure other than what we hear from his coaches and teammates. From what I’ve heard and read so far is nothing but positive…granted I dont get all the local Detroit media so I am sure you guys hear more then I do.

I don't understand why people questioned Stafford's durability

Go back and look at the hits Stafford took when he got hurt. I challenge anyone to find someone on this planet who could take those hits without busting their shoulder up. The human body isn’t designed to have 300 lb linemen forcefully drive it into the ground, no matter how athletic you are.

They did it for Savy, they did it for Horton, they did it for each other, they did it for us. I give you the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions....The Boston Bruins!!

My Lions lost to the Saints who are clearly the better team. (This is what happens when you back your team and they lose),

Let me ask you a serious question

Do you really think I did not know that Stafford was the 5th player to break 5k yards in a season?

Seriously? I am not sure who this is insulting here, you or me.

The guy has finished one of his three pro seasons. Saying that durability is not a concern is not being realistic. One full season out of 3 does not make a leader. One full season out of 3 does not make an elite QB. He has the tools. Now, he just has to find a way to stay on the field.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-There are approximately 45 cats and dogs for every person born.
-Only 1 out of 10 dogs born ever get a home.
-Only 1 out of 12 cats born ever find a home.
-Approximately 800 dogs & cats are KILLED each HOUR in the United States, because there are not enough homes for them!

Was more of a just look at the other names in that group. A pretty good list to be a part of that is all that was for…not trying to be a dick or anything.

As for a leader, IMO you either are one of those guys or you arent. Some guys are made to be a leeader because of their position or personality. Everything I have seen and read from the Lions organization is that Stafford is the leader of the offence.

Hey your entitled to your opinion I was just curious as to what you were questioning Stafford on. I disagree with what your view is, but I am in no position to say your wrong. I am not worried about his durability as I know from my sports days that broken bones and all that stuff happen and sometimes from just a low impact collision at an awkward angle. Stafford has taken enough hits and got himself back up to not have me concerned.

Recked that.

Attention span of vast majority of the public and the mainstream media = fifteen freaking minutes.

"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!

Richard Seymour would've made the list

If the media had made a bigger deal of his dirty play….instead he made the pro bowl. I think the constant breaking down of the Suh stomp just put Suh on blast….in much the same way that many became tired.annoyed by the Tebow storyline

I gotta agree some with joshsun.

There is something about Suh and his self promotion, and the way he reacted right after the stomp that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. The media then dragged it out and here you go.
