NFL Free Agency Rumors: Lions Interested In Cortland Finnegan?
As NFL free agency nears, one of the players Detroit Lions fans should keep an eye on is cornerback Cortland Finnegan. He is set to become a free agent next month, and it doesn't sound like the Tennessee Titans plan on bringing him back. Things could obviously change, but the last time we heard from Finnegan, he was sounding like somebody who wasn't going to be re-signed by Tennessee.
Assuming Finnegan does become a free agent, the Lions are going to be considered by many to be the favorite to sign him. Detroit could use help at cornerback, and Finnegan played for Jim Schwartz when Schwartz was the Titans' defensive coordinator. What's more, already a report is out there from the Free Press suggesting that there could be interest in Finnegan from the Lions side of things.
According to a league source not affiliated with the Lions, Detroit could be one of the key teams interested in Finnegan if the Titans don't sign him before free agency starts March 13.
Until Finnegan signs somewhere, expect to hear more stories like this. The Lions make sense as a landing spot for Finnegan, and I would anticipate there to be a lot of speculation surrounding him and Detroit as long as he is a free agent.

Cap Room
Is there even enough cap room to pull this off? Wouldn’t the Lions have to renegotiate some contracts?
Good question
I think a lot could change with cap room depending on if some deals are restructured/extended from now until March.

to quote a guy we all know
C’Mon man! The fords have money up the wazoo! Sign Calvin to an extension get finnegan, tulloch, backus, and what ever other parts we need. We been so bad for such a longtime we couldn’t or shouldn’t have wanted to spend the cash….but now we have a chance to go places with some key signings wcf open up the wallet and go secure us some guys that can help us win…..

they can want to spend all the cash in the world
but if they don’t have the cap space they just can’t do it. If CJ doesn’t restructure their hands become severely tied to keep all the guys they may want.

30 days until FA kickoff...
I will take Finnegan he is one of the guys i wouldnt mind seeing in the D next year. He is one of few i want in FA but if i had my way i would go Carr and then him. I also like Griffen or Branch.

There is no way the Chiefs are going to let Carr go cheaply.
I think he will cost more than Jonathon Joseph. Carr has started every game for the Chiefs since he was drafted in 2008 and is just turning 26 this year. He arguably had his best season last year and looks to be getting better.
"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!
This is a Jim and Martin kind of guy...
and its an area of need. We missed on PP and Ashanti last year i think we could see Jim and Martin go aggressive this year if its after Carr or Finnegan.

I like this
Finnegan is one of the best covers out there and…well if the media is gonna call us dirty he’ll fit right in!
While we're at it
Draft Burfict, let Suh take off someone’s head in preseason again, and try to keep Delmas healthy for a whole season.
If mayhew can swing it, I'm down
(I just don’t see how it will happen.)

If hes looking for around 10million per how does that fit into our already tight salary cap situation?
Not saying I wouldnt love him on the Lions but at that price isnt it going to be a little tough to get him priced in?
They did it for Savy, they did it for Horton, they did it for each other, they did it for us. I give you the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions....The Boston Bruins!!
My Lions lost to the Saints who are clearly the better team. (This is what happens when you back your team and they lose),
kinda makes me wonder
if Cliff is on the way out…

Or, perhaps...
Who would the FO like to have more? Cliff or Cortland? If you had to choose only one of the two in Honolulu Blue next year who would you pick?
We have a lot more depth on the DLine
Give me the 8 million CB over the 8 Million DE

well, again
As light as Suh was at the end of the year he would move to DE.
rotating LoJack, Willie, Suh, Fluellen on DE. Moving suh around. pulling out bigger DE packages on running downs.
The production might fall off but 11 sacks from DE is not exactly impossible to replace. The 6 Forced fumbles are all fluke. They will probably not happen again this next season just because they are just about all luck.

Thanks Joshsun
My unknown is how Cortland would do. KVB and Tulloch have done really well. I don’t think it would be a popular decision but I can see the FO doing it.
Where do you get this "Suh loses weight" meme?
Can you back this up with any source? Any?
You are beginning to sound like RalphGoBlue with this nonsense. Back it up.

Easy now man, no need to go there.
You and I both know all too well how closely guarded players weights and heights are on the NFL.
It was commented on by both reporters and teammates.

Did they whisper this info into your ear?
I never heard anyone say that or could find nothing in print about that. I would think that is something that would have been written about often if it had a shred of truth to it.
I heard lots of other theories regarding his drop off in performance, but not once did I hear or read anything about his weight.
Give it up joshsun.

I recently heard it mentioned on NFL live
within the last couple weeks. That certainly doesn’t mean it’s true, just that it’s being said in other places than by him.

There is nothing to give up man
Just because you have not heard anything about it does not make it false.
Come down off your high horse.
I guess Ee Oulo is saying repeating stuff from NFL network just to piss you off?
People have been talking about his lighter playing weight since training camp.

You might be on to something here
Just depends on what the FO feels is more important. My guess is with the loss to the Saints in the playoffs and people passing all over us the last half of the season I have a feeling they might be wanting a corner. The hard part is that at the start of the season when the D was healthy they were pretty good and as injuries took their toll the defence started to falter. So were our DB’s as bad as advertised or was it because of health reasons that teams were able to light us up. Teams started doing quick routes because it negated our D-lines push and exposed our injured or depleted secondary.
Now that I think it about I am glad all I have to GM is madden.

The more I think about it...
The more I end up running in circles too. What I end up with is that an Avril in the hand is better than Finnegan and/or a Avril in the bush. If there is anyway to get Avril signed to a below market contract before free agency begins than get it done.
Pass
Rather have a younger kid up and coming that an overrated over the hill guy.
