Lions Notes: Tim Walton Discusses His Promotion
- According to Tim Twentyman, it doesn't sound like there will be any design changes to the Detroit Lions' uniform despite the Nike switch happening this year. The main change will be with the material of the jerseys.
- Lions secondary/third-down package coach Tim Walton talked with the Lions' official site about the promotion he received this week. He said he hopes his next step is to become a full-time defensive coordinator and then eventually move on to being a head coach.
- Tom Lewand said earlier this week that Ndamukong Suh wasn't as productive, but he was just as effective in 2011 as he was in 2010.
- Suh will be the grand marshal of the NASCAR race in Phoenix on March 4.
- Lewand was asked directly about Cortland Finnegan and avoided the question in order to avoid more tampering issues.
- One more note from Lewand ... He said that this offseason the Lions are trying to become stronger at every position other than quarterback.
- Mike Mayock shared his thoughts on the Lions during a conference call earlier this week.
- Mike O'Hara has an interesting piece on the Lions' injury situation last season.
- Click here for a picture of Nate Burleson and Jeremy Lin, the hottest name in sports right now.
- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is going to make around $20 million a year by the end of this decade. And I thought players were often overpaid.
- The new CBA does not include the possibility of a "poison pill" being used with offer sheets for restricted/tagged free agents, according to Pro Football Talk.
- Randy Moss is coming back. And before you ask, the Lions should not even consider signing him. No way.
- One-time Lions safety Marquand Manuel is now an assistant for the Seattle Seahawks.

"poison pill"?
i read the article and i am still not sure what this poison pill thing is, anyone care to explain it to me?
Basically...
You make an offer to a restricted free agent. The team who owns the rights to the RFA has the option of matching that offer or letting the person walk. What you’d do is put in some kind of escalator in your offer like saying “If [player X] plays in [city of team who owns the rights] for 10 games this season, the contract will become [X amount of dollars] higher.” So basically, if a team signs that tender to keep the rights to their restricted free agent, they wind up massively overpaying them. So a team basically has to let them walk.

Oh...
in that case good, I’m glad they got rid of it. Thanks for explaining it.

Steve Hutchinson and Nate Burleson had those type of offers back in the day.
I believe in both cases their entire contract was going to be guaranteed if they played five games in the state of Washington [with Hutchinson] or the state of Minnesota [with Burleson].
Hutchinson went from Seattle to Minnesota, and Nate went from Minnesota to Seattle.
"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!
To be more general about it, a 'poison pill' is a device used to stave off hostile takeovers of corporations.
The premise is to make the takeover as expensive as possible.

Not me. I didn't think what they offered was an improvement over what the Lions have now.

I liked the black jerseys...
Although since Carolina has pretty much copied the Lions lettering and altered their uniforms to look more like the Lions, it’d probably get WAY too confusing.

I pity the Seahawks.
Marquand Manuel was one of the worst DBs the Lions have had in the past 5 years. It’s a debate whether Manuel, CC Brown, or Jonathan Wade was the worst.

it doesnt matter how he played
What matters most is what’s between the ears. He can be a great leader and rally the troops. He might be very smart, just not have the physical aspects. A lot of coaches never play pro ball.
