Trade, or cut Cory Williams and Nate burleson and KVB

You all can shoot me for this. I don't care. This is not a knock on the players but their contracts. I really like all of these players. Cut Vanden Bosch, He is not only very expensive and old but too many times I have watched him running past the opposing running back on his way the the QB. Lo jack can replace KVB. We would then draft or trade for another end. I would hope 2nd maybe third round at the latest. Cory Williams for hopfully a 6th. He could be replaced by Nick Fairley. You don't draft a top ten DT to back up other players. I know Mayhew could draft another Sammie Lee Hill in the 5th round. Nate Burleson for a 5th round pick. Too many dropped passes. But unlike Pettigrew time isn't on Nate's side. I would like to see a little taller reciever opposite Calvin. Titus is still our burner. Well there you have it. I just messed with the chemistry, while eliminating any vetran leadership! I also lowered our cap and became a much younger team all at the same time. I know this idea won't happen, but I really like the idea of getting younger while lowering our cap. FIRE AWAY!!!

These three guys have very little trade value.

I guess by that, I mean none. Nobody will want their contracts either.

Nate is the one of the three that I would keep. His 2012 CAP hit is the lowest of the three at $4M, versus $5M [KVB] and $6M [Corey]. He is still a pretty productive guy who has no replacement on the roster right now, unlike the other two [KVB – Lawrence J, and Fairly or Sammie Lee for Corey].

I would prefer to keep both KVB and Corey at a reduced cost, but that could be very tough.

There are

SOME good points you make, but team chemistry plays a much bigger role than anyone could possibly understand. All it could take is one bad attitude and it spreads to the other players like a virus. Thats why I see Nate and KVB possibly ending their career in Detroit. As for Corey, if we don’t work out a deal with Avril and he holds out, I can see Suh playing more end next year and that will require more snaps from “Big Nick”, “Sub Sammie”, and “Apple Cory.” Sorry about the lame nicknames.

by Youjustgotlevy'd on Feb 21, 2012 9:08 AM EST up reply actions

Totally agree

You don’t mess with a team chemistry that’s clicking. Mayhew will find a way to renegotiate some of these contracts, or we will lose someone. I can’t see that being his preferred route however. Nate’s a major factor in team attitude. Kyle is a premier leader, it’s that simple. Corey is needed if we lose Cliff (which I see happening more and more) to maintain our depth on the line. These players are nearing the end of their careers. I can’t see any teams making a play for them. They’re much more valuable to us.

Expectations don't produce!

Man it's to early for this lol

Corey I can part with him. KVB is a nice asset but is way over paid we need to get his number down. Nate I love but I would like to see Titus opposite Calvin with Nate in the slot.

I could possible see where you were coming from if you were talking Cap issues

but getting rid of quality starters for crap shoot late round picks is absurd IMO. That’s just playing really bad odds. I don’t think it’s Mayhew’s style, in fact I’d say it’s the opposite of his style…

I am talking cap issues

Look even if you can’t trade them, where is the money coming from? these players are good, and I like all three. With that being said this isn’t baseball. where is the money going to come from?

If money was not an issue

I would keep everyone on the roster minus Mourice Morris.

OK this is why your idea is simply not realistic.

The Lions have already signed Corey WIlliams, KVB, and Nate to contracts. When those contracts were signed, they all received signing bonuses. That signing bonus is them spread out over multiple years of the contract in order to make the salary cap hit smaller. Currently the outstanding money on those bonuses is:

Kyle Vanden Bosch: $4.6 million (or $5.1 million if he makes it to his roster bonus this season).
Nate Burleson: about $3 million over three years.
Corey Williams: No outstanding bonus left.

Now what you may not realize is when a team cuts a player that has outstanding money left on their signing bonuses to amortize, they have to write off all of that outstanding amount in the year they are cut. This is called dead cap money in the terms of the CBA. So you will not save as much as you think.

So here are the real numbers.

Kyle Vanden Bosch: 2012 cap hit is $7,730,000 so if you cut him you would save about $2.7 million if you did it early and about $2.2 million if you did it after you paid his roster bonus for this year.

Nate Burleson: His cap hit for 2012 is just under $5 million. So if you cut him you would save about $2 million on the cap.

Corey Williams is the only guy out of the three that would save you any substantial cap money because he has already had his singing bonus written off. If I remember correctly, that is because he signed in the 2010 season which was an uncapped year. So the Lions just wrote all of the bonus off in that season.

So if you cut all three you would get roughly $10 million in cap space. Not the nearly $18 million that you might think.

So what would you do to replace these three players with that $10 million?

Listen to the Two Bro's Talk podcast!

by TuffLynx on Feb 21, 2012 11:45 AM EST reply actions

ohhh interesting info about the dead cap money

I had thought they were allowed to continue the amortization. I didn’t realize it all reverted to the year of severance. That sure does make for a more complicated situation for them to potentially clear up cap with any of those guys.

Corey's contract is from his days as a Brown. 2008

LINK: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/detroit-lions/corey-williams/

From the above summary, he still is getting paid a bonus. Just over $1M.

But I agree with you TL that these guys are all valuable contributors to the Lions success, and that the Lions will need to replace them all with guys who can play. These are three starters right now.
I am not saying it is impossible, or even that it will be extremely difficult. It is just not going to be easy. How much gets saved and what level of play you will get from their replacements is very much unknown.

"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!

thank you tuff lynx for the break-down

But also remember that the cap savings next year would be substantial. Also 2 of the three have replacemnts on the roster already in SLH and Lo Jack. With that being said i’m not saying this is feasable just throwing my two cents at it.

It does become realistic if the Lions can find trade partners.

I think that is possible with Corey Wlliams. They might be able to get a fourth or fifth round pick for him. I don’t know if they can get anybody to bite on the contracts for KVB or Nate.

Williams

is also one of our better interior DT’s against the run and short yardage. Outside of his love of jumping offsides, he is quality. KVB on the other hand… I digress.

by JaySoul on Feb 21, 2012 2:10 PM EST reply actions

would you pay a man 5-6 million

To be “quality”? Maybe, but I wouldn’t. Not with SLH and Failey.

I don't know why

maybe I’m a sadist. But I think it is hilarious; the gnashing of teeth that goes on when we draft certain positions. So I would fall out of my chair laughing if we drafted someone like Sanu in round one and traded Burleson.

Although I really like Nate, I could see it being an option. There has to be a price in coming back from 0-16 so quickly, and broken hearts are inevitable.

I can see the headline now, “Mohamed Sanu in round one and Doug Martin in round two; mental health facilities overwhelmed in Michigan.”

Just kidding Mayhew; Draft Konz or Mercilus.

Follett you were a beast but I must move on. Let's get on it Mr. Young.

by TheForceOfFollett on Feb 22, 2012 12:37 AM EST reply actions

pending the offseason none are actually expendable

KVB- probably entering his last year of playing and probably wants his last pay year he knows for sure he’ll have on this level. Not to mention if Avril goes need depth for sure.

Nate- his cap hit isnt that much but he’s also not expendable at this point. unless they can draft another WR in the later rounds who can play right away. Young will eventually pass Burleson if he didnt already last year as he’s very similar yet younger but after him you have no one if CJ goes down.

Cwill is only expendable if Cliff stays otherwise what was once your strength now becomes your weakness.

this front office has one heck of a job to do this year in the off season especially after such a great turn around and finally getting the team back in the right direction including an appearance in the playoffs. To me this is the year that Mayhew and co. will truly earn his “grade”. They used to have 3-5 years for coaches to truly get settled in and get their personnel right I think if you take where the lions are they are right on that hump where some hard decisions on how to continue to be consistent come in.

by JaiGaiaAries on Feb 22, 2012 1:06 PM EST reply actions

CWill and Cliff play different positions.

Whether Cliff goes or stays only should impact Corey with respect to the CAP space that the Lions have available.

Frankly, I don’t see the D Line being much weaker without CWill on it. Assuming that his snaps get taken up by Sammie Lee and Nick. The Lions could use another DT, either a cheaper veteran or a draft pick for depth.

"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!

You know, his numbers were down this last season

but he was still starting every game.

If we could keep Avril in the 6-7 mil range (1/2 what he is asking I think), I would be willing to part ways with CWill.

but there are some(myself included) that do not want to over pay for the guy. 5 to 6 million is a do-able contract for me as well.

The reason is simple. I think the Lions are going to have to overpay for him to stay and that is entirely unacceptable to me.

well hell yeah

If we were the Yankies of football (I just vomited a little) I would love to overpay him and when he underperformed that fat contract we could just spend more to replace him with someone that would live up to his contract.

To carry this hypothetical properly, if money was no object, I would take Mario Williams over Avril without even blinking an eye.

You know, I've always had a problem with that saying.

Blinking is both voluntary and involuntary. Besides, if you chose Mario and blinked, would that change your preference? What if it was an involuntary blink and not a voluntary one? Vice versa? Have you ever said something along the lines of, “I would do that, but I’d probably blink an eye.”
Don’t even get me started on paying through the nose…

KVB has almost no value

Williams has a tiny amount, 6th would be max, and Nate is worth something to the right team, but again, 5th would be max.. and unlikely.

That being said, if all you can get is very late round picks, why not just keep them?
