2012 NFL Combine Odds

You can pretty much bet on anything in the world of sports, especially if it involves the NFL. For events like the Super Bowl, NFL Draft and NFL Combine, there is a seemingly endless amount of prop bets that allow you to bet on ridiculous things like which team will win the coin toss, which conference will have the most players picked in the first round and who will run the fastest 40-yard dash.

The latter of those three things is just one of the many possible bets for the 2012 NFL Combine. There is a whole set of NFL Combine odds that came out yesterday. They come via Bovada, and you can check them out after the jump.

40 time is the most overrated statistic in football

How many plays call for starting out in a sprinter’s stance? Proof: Oakland.

Other than the Raiders, no one cares

The 40 isn’t about who can run 40 yards fastest, it’s about running form, conditioning, explosiveness, and acceleration. The scouts probably won’t even look at the final time, they’ll be looking at the 20 and 30 splits and the tape to see how long the guy stays in his acceleration phase before hitting his stride.

Explanation of the 40 Yard Dash:

The 40 yard dash was created to simulate gunners in the NFL on punts, which used to average ~40 yards. The idea was that if the gunners could run a 40 in a time less than the hang time of the punt (4-4.5 seconds), they would be good on punt coverage. It has since become a little more irrelevant since we don’t draft players hoping they will be star gunners.
