IMO, What the Lions Should do this Offseason...
Draft
1- OT Mike Adams, big LT, good feet, a bit raw
2- C Ben Jones, strong center, good run blocker
3- DE Cam Johnson, decent size, good burst, plays hard
4- RB Chris Polk, tough runner, decent quickness/speed
Free Agency
Sign WR Early Doucet- reliable hands and very cheap
Sign CB Brandon Carr- Good and young corner, Michigan roots
Resign CJ- free cap space!
Let Backus go- more cap space, throw adams into fire
Let Avril go- even more cap space, let Lojack, Willie, and Cam Johnson compete for starting LE spot, result should be a very productive starter
Release Raiola- cap space, let Ben Jones take over Let Eric Wright go- too inconsistent Resign Tulloch- really like him as our MLB
This leaves the roster something like this:
QB- Matt Stafford, Shaun Hill
HB- Jahvid Best, Mikel Leshoure, Chris Polk, Kevin Smith
WR- Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, Titus Young, Early Doucet, Rashied Davis
TE- Brandon Pettigrew, Tony Scheffler, Will Heller
LT- Mike Adams, Jason Fox
LG- Rob Sims, Jacques McClendon
C- Ben Jones, Dylan Gandy
RG- Leonard Davis, Stephen Peterman
RT- Gosder Cherilus, Corey Hilliard
LE- Lawrence Jackson/Willie Young/Cam Johnson
RE- Kyle Vanden bosch, Lawrence Jackson/Willie Young/Cam Johnson
DT- Ndamukong Suh, Corey Williams, Nick Fairley, Sammie Hill
LOLB- Justin Durant, Bobby Carpenter
MLB- Stephen Tulloch, Ashlee Palmer
ROLB- Deandre Levy, Doug Hogue
CB- Brandon Carr, Chris Houston, Alphonso Smith, Aaron Berry, Brandon McDonald
FS- Louis Delmas, John Wendling
SS- Amari Spievey, Erik Coleman/Chris Harris
K- Jason Hanson
P- Ryan Donahue
KR/PR- Stefan Logan

I honestly wanted to pull my hair out when I read these lines.
Let Backus go- more cap space, throw adams into fire
Release Raiola- cap space, let Ben Jones take over Let Eric Wright go
Also, re-sign Leonard Davis? Jacques McClendon?
Alot of what you wrote I don’t disagree with, but these few lines make me want to punch babies.
It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

punch babies...classic!
sounds like 1 step forward and 3 steps back

look what the 49ers did last season. they through iupati and anthony davis into the fire on the oline and in the preseason and the first couple games they were terrible but at the end of the season they had a very good unit

plus resigning mcclendon and leonard davis would be dirt cheap

at this point we get alot younger and put alot of pieces in place for the future. plus it leaves us with few holes

?
Iupati and Davis were picked in 2010. They were 2nd year players, and even then they were simply above average.

Above average? is that all?
lol
I will take above average in the run game any damn day of the week
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-There are approximately 45 cats and dogs for every person born.
-Only 1 out of 10 dogs born ever get a home.
-Only 1 out of 12 cats born ever find a home.
-Approximately 800 dogs & cats are KILLED each HOUR in the United States, because there are not enough homes for them!
lol
We’re talking about TWO first rounders. Above average is sad

To the average fan who does know anything about cap space and the Lions situation
This probably makes a lot of sense. To the people that follow this team like a religion: This make next to no sense. How do you release Jeff Backus? He’s a unrestricted free agent. He doesn’t have a salary with the Lions. How do you plan to sign Stephen Tulloch AND Brandon Carr? You do realize Carr will be asking for 6+ mil a season right? Where do we find that kind of money? Raiola is only make 3.4 mil 2012. Just releasing him won’t accomplish all that you mentioned. Also, why would Early Doucet sign here to be our 4th receiver when he would have offers to start elsewhere and why would the Lions spend that much money going after a 4th string wideout?

I didn’t say release Backus I said let him walk. And you sign Tulloch and Carr by resigning CJ and letting Raiola go. This should leave them with just enough room. Also with the early Doucet thing I see where your coming from, stupid idea.

CJs cap number this year is 22 mill and resigning him should get that down to around 10. That’s 12 million right there

That's 12 mil this season
But what about seasons later when the cap number goes up?

theres plenty other ways to cut cost in the future we just dont know what they are at this point yet haha…my point is its doable
by anthonymperri on Feb 22, 2012 10:51 PM EST up reply actions
right now we are right at the max of i think it is 122 million. resigning cj and releasing dom gives us 15 million in cap space. if carr costs 6 mill a year and we can get tulloch for around 5 mill a year that still leaves us with 4 million dollars plus the money we can borrow from future years in cap space if they choose to use it
Wow
Well, you can’t be faulted for being wimpy at all. There are a lot of very risky moves there. They are much more risky than anything Mayhew/Schwartz have shown they will do. It is good that you qualify that this is your opinion, because it is not going to be close to what actually happens.
Let me point out just a few places where you are almost certain to be off base…
The Lions have already stated they want Backus to return. The press from the team has all been about how Backus is coming along well and will be ready for camp. Schwartz and Mayhew have had the back of Jeff Backus all along and I do not see them stabbing him in the back now.
Dominic Raiola is under contract for another season. The Lions did look at several centers in camp last season and that is an indication that they are aware that Raiola needs to be replaced. Nevertheless, they are unlikely to sweep Raiola off the roster even if they do draft a player that will start at center. It is more likely that they would keep Raiola on the roster as insurance for at least one season before he lost his roster spot.
While Early Doucet is a bit under the radar, teams in the NFL tend to do their homework. Doucet is just coming off his rookie contract and he is going to be looking for a lot more than he made in that one. He has improved steadily every year and he finally got a chance to get out from behind the shadow of other players last season. He put up numbers that were comparable to Nate Burleson and would be acceptable as a #2 receiver on almost any team. I think the Lions would prefer to go with a third or fourth round draft pick as a developmental WR and save some money.
You have not accounted for all of the running backs that the Lions have right now. Currently the Lions have Best, LeShoure, Kieland Williams, Joique Bell, and Stephan Logan. I think that either Williams or Bell will make the roster. Kevin Smith will have to be signed again and that is not certain. While he gave the Lions some good carries when they really needed them last season, he went down to injuries again. He has proven to be unreliable because he cannot stay healthy. I don’t know if the Lions will deal with that or maybe try to draft somebody like Isaiah Pead to be an insurance policy for Jahvid Best. LeShoure, Williams, and Bell all fill the role as bangers out of the backfield. What the Lions need is another speed back.
It is usually a bad idea to replace more than one player on your offensive line during a season. The offensive line is just as much about timing and coordination as it is about talent. The idea that you can just plug in new pieces and they will fit is incorrect. Each new player causes the entire line to adjust to new timing and tendencies. Working in one new player is more work than you think. Working in two rookies in the same season is a recipe for disaster.

I know that these moves are pretty unlikely but this is just what I would LIKE to see happen. I realize that there’s not a snowballs chance in hades that these will ALL happen but it’s fun to speculate and fantasize :)

just for the sake of arguement, I say cut everybody then ask for applications and hire/sign anybody that looks somewhat fit
that will get us under the cap and should produce a good product

ifthe right offensive linemen is their he will be the pick let play lions gm you have had high draft picks the last few drafts and you spent them mackeing the loins now aplayoff team from a very bad nfl team but you want to stay their for next few years .so want do you now ?.you have spent alot of cap space to try to fix the defensive side of the ball and the skill spots on the offensive side of the ball .but have not rebulit the offensive line while have tryed to add deltph to by drafting late rd offensivelinmen but none has ben hueuprade from where you where when start ed to rebuiled the lions and none right now could replace any of your starters if you needd them too.. so hears want ithink the lions gm will do if any of these players our when we pick in 1rd mike adames ot ohiio state /// peter konz c/og wisconin//// johnathan martin ot standford ///kelechi osemelple og iowastate orcorrdy glenn ot/og .and hears who they will be ranked on the lions draft boared all OT will be ranked higher the n CET/OG PLAYERS or OG/OT PLAYERS OUT of players ithink the lions might draft this year in the 1rd .as for backus ithink they keep him only 0ene year and draft a ot in the 1rdof the draft.
