Matthew Stafford ( Alumni) QB of the year
Among the numerous media awards along with the fan vote awards. Being elected to Pro Bowls and making All Pro rosters. There is a little thing called the NFL Alumni awards. These are the awards that are handed out but the prestigous NFL Alumni every year. Matthew Stafford walked away with one if the greatest awards you can be given at your postion. The Nfl Alumni voted him as the Quarterback of the year. Beating out Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. Stafford was also up for Player of the year between himself, Rodgers and Maurice Jones-Drew. MJD however won that award along with running back of the year.
I can't speak for Matthew but in my eyes if I was being given an award like this by the Alumni. It would mean a hell of alot more than anything the asscoiated press or sporting news could give me. Being awarded a honor like that by your peers is something you can hang onto forever. While it won't get the coverage of being the comeback player of everyones year. Quitely this award must mean so much more than that. Congrats Matthew I along with many Lions fans are so happy to see you get the real respect you have deserved all year.
Wikipedia: Since 1982 the NFL Alumni has held the Player of the Year Awards Dinner honoring the top 10 players and coach from the previous NFL season. The players are honored by a unique voting process in which former players cast ballots for their modern counterparts. Former pros vote only for the positions they once played themselves
Also nominated for the Lions was Calvin Johnson, but award for Wide Receiver of the Year went to New York Giants wideout Hakeem Nicks.

Yes this is a great honour for Matthew.
But……….. Hakeem Nicks over Calvin as WR of the year?!! Are you freaking kidding me?
Nicks was not even the best WR on his own team. Remember a guy named Victor Cruz?Do any of these guys actually watch the players they are voting for?
"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!
The voters are only former players at that position
so no doubt Cris Carter screwed Calvin when he completely left him off his ballot for lack of eliteness.
Cool that Stafford won, but
I’m not sure whats they were basing their votes on. I MJD voted player of the year? And I read Chris Long was voted best Dlinemen. IMO, none of these winners (including Stafford) makes any sense.
Also, Cruz is good and all but don’t get sucked in by the media attention on him. Nicks is still the man on that team. But you’re right, Calvin deserved it.
I don't disagree that longer term Nicks is going to have the better career.
But this award is for the Player of the Year, not “Best Player”. And really, there is no doubt that Cruz had a better year than Nicks. The Patriots seemed to think so too.

It looked like a good post- and a strong award
until you mentioned Nicks got WR of the year…. then it sounds pretty bogus, political, and that the people voting don’t watch all that much. I like Nicks, and he had a nice postseason but for regular season… I don’t get it
