Roger Goodell's Letter To Fans

On Tuesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent out an email with a letter to fans. The purpose of the letter was to thank fans for their support during the 2011 season, as well as to look ahead to the future of the sport. The letter included a link to the website based around the "NFL Evolution" campaign, so I think you can draw your own conclusions about the purpose of the letter.

You can check it out after the jump.

To NFL Fans:

Now that another remarkable NFL season has concluded, let me express my gratitude on behalf of all 32 NFL teams for your incredible support. Record numbers of you watched at home, made your way to the stadium, and connected with the NFL in numerous other ways during the 2011 season. Your love of football is what makes the NFL special.

We are proud of the quality of the game today. From the individuals and team skills on display in every game to the record-breaking achievements of future Hall of Famers, the 2011 season was extraordinary on many levels.

It finished up with some of the most exciting playoff games of recent years leading to a tense, drama-filled Super Bowl between the Giants and Patriots that was the most-watched show in the history of television. What a tribute to our players, coaches, and fans!

As good as it's been, I believe the NFL's best days are ahead. Our responsibility in leading the league is to protect and enhance the bond between our game and the passionate fans who sustain it. We know we have to earn your trust every day and prove we are worthy of your amazing support.

Our commitment to improve everything we do is ongoing. We are not done yet. From the game on the field to the fan experience at home -- and everything in between -- there are ways we can do even better. We owe it to you, the fans, to believe in better and strive for more. Our game has always evolved and that will continue. I encourage you to visit our new web site - NFL.com/evolution - to explore how the game has improved over the past century. There are more good changes to come.

Our mission is captured very simply in these four words:
Forever forward. Forever football. Thank you once again for your passion and commitment to the game we all love.

Bend Over Here It Comes Again

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

I think you nearby "spread"your cheeks – Roger Doger likes to go for the “money shot”when ut comes to everything Detriot. The pick.

Let’s try that again! I think you meant “spread” your cheeks not"clinch"them. Roger Ram Jet prefers the “money shot” when it comes to all things Detroit! There – now the english speaking population can read my dribble! :)

Before we know it, if it’s up to Goodell, football will no longer be football. And yet, he keeps sucking up to fans, pretending to care what we think.

I just really dislike this smug bastard

When he was first appointed commish I thought he was an alright guy. Seemed nice, cool, hip young. I enjoyed the way the draftees would get excited and give him a big giant hug after they were drafted and all that lovable stuff. But geesh, his actions over the past few years in regards to on the field play, rules interpretations, etc etc has made me dislike him. As the commish of the country’s most beloved sport he has the opportunity to bring to the forefront of the leauge what the fans want to see in the game today.

The fans are what makes this sport what it is. It is why you have billionaires owning the teams. We as the fans give them the money! Our money, our hard earned money and they live a lavish lifestyle as do the players for having the size and ability to play the game, with our money. The NFL and football in general is viewed as such a blue collar game which makes this country so great.

I applaud the fact that he spoke out on the issue of the pro bowl. However, the NFL is a business and business is all about the bottom line. With record number people tuning in to the game, that is a lot of money. However, we also have to realize that it is a lot easier and cheaper, sort of, for someone to buy a television and get cable nowadays as opposed to 50, 40, 30, 20 years ago. Yes, we will continue to see the trend in “record breaking” viewers tuning into this “games”. Anyway, I did applaud him on talking about the pro bowl. However, I give him a big jeer for the fact that he doesn’t ever seem to want to address the serious issues we are looking for at fans which taint the game today.

Anyway, the commish is in the back pocket of the owners. If he wasn’t he wouldn’t have a job because the owners are the ones who give him the job.

I just

can’t respect anyone who can stand there and bold faced lie and act like there isn’t biased or corruption in the officiating. Most of the league’s responses to issues (officiating or otherwise) I find flat out insulting to my intelligence.

This league makes millions hand over fist. They could afford to make every official a six figure position that would help them reach a station where they wouldn’t be receiving pictures of their kids in the mail from Vinny and Vito.

Then they would then have more to lose than gain by making the wrong calls because risk of losing hundreds of thousands will check your bias at the door. Goodell is a paper puppet ass clown.

Roger Goodell's legacy...

Never have I seen anyone associated with the rules of a professional sport obsessed over changing the things that made this game great, and ignore all of the issues that need addressing. If Roger Goodell wanted to make any improvements in this game than he would fire all of the lame officials and replace them with professional officials that had one job and one job only… officiating NFL games correctly. He’s made at least a dozen (if not more) changes to this game under the guise of player safety and rules to improve the game, (many of which have made the game less entertaining and nowhere near any safer) but he refuses to address the MOST GLARING issue and that is the INCONSISTENT OFFICIATING. I used to LOVE the sport of football, (or at least as it was here in the USA) but I am beginning to dislike it more and more as the years go by. Roger Goodell is destroying the game and the quality has gone down significantly since he has been in charge… I’M NOT ALONE IN THAT ASSESSMENT. It is becoming blatantly obvious that Las Vegas (or some other criminal entity) has more power over this game than Roger Goodell ever dreamed of, which is probably why he’s so obsessed with changing the rules that he has the power to. Remember when he came to Detroit and talked to the season-ticket holders? I saw the broadcast of that online and he claimed that every play of every single NFL game is reviewed by the league office in New York, and he stated that 99% of every call the officials made were correct. Apparently they’re not watching the replays of the games that are taking place weekly and in the last few seasons, because the officiating has gone downhill IMMENSELY!!! Even with the Detroit Lions averaging 12 penalties per game (or thereabouts) probably almost half of those penalty calls going against the Lions should never have been called. And that doesn’t even include all of the non-calls the Lions never get that should have penalized the opposing team. If anyone has any doubts you needn’t go any further back in history than the last two games the Lions played this season. There were several blown calls, wrong calls, (not to mention ignorant calls) “ill-timed whistles” and the like in those two games that screamed for PROFESSIONAL OFFICIALS! The Jordy Nelson muffed punt decision (I won’t even justify that by calling that a call) in the Green Bay game… remember that one (the one that even Mr. Magoo Would’ve gotten right) if you need anything else to prove how corrupt the NFL is I don’t know what it’s gonna take. I used to be crazy about the NHL too, but Gary Bettman turned me off to that sport when he reluctantly awarded the Stanley Cup to the Detroit Red Wings the last time they won it. If anyone couldn’t tell by his disapproving body language, fake smile, and anxiousness to remove himself from the ice surface after awarding the trophy then I don’t know what more proof you need. I will be hard-pressed to watch another NFL game until Roger Goodell grows a pair of gonads, bucks the institution, and employees officials that study the game in the off-season, and make the correct (not to mention competent) calls during the regular season. Unfortunately I don’t see that happening especially with the younger generation because they don’t care enough about the sport to protest it. As long as everyone keeps spending money on the NFL, promoting teams by purchasing jerseys and whatnot, not to mention paying the exorbitant prices for tickets to go to a game then nothing will ever change. The product that the NFL is currently thriving on will continue to diminish for those of us who are true fans, purists of the game prior to the Roger Goodell era. The only reason that Roger Goodell refuses to employ professional officials to officiate NFL games is MONEY (IMHO) because the NFL would have to pay their salaries year-round and not just during the season. Why would Roger Goodell want to take money out of this his own pocket (not to mention the rest of his cronies in the NFL offices) to improve the game when people are willing to accept the status quo? If you need any proof look at how crummy ex-NFL players lives are because of the NFL not treating their ex employees (ex-NFL players) like anything other than livestock after they have served their purpose. I swear to God they might as well be horses heading to the glue factory after serving their Lords and Masters faithfully their entire lives.

Dude? Paragraphs, come on, WTF?

Press enter every once in a while, it makes for a more enjoyable and easier read…..no, really

Otherwise, a pretty good rant on your part, my biggest beef is the replay crap…..the fact that the coaches have to do the refs job by using their precious 2 challenges that they can run out of because of those stupid ref miscalls and teams lose because of it.

Just plain Bull Shit, too much inequity in the calls is so blatant it’s embarrassing.
