Lions Take Matt Kalil--At Six Overall?

In his latest mock draft, ESPN Draft Analyst Todd McShay currently has USC OT Matt Kalil falling to the Rams at six overall. McShay has the Vikings going with Morris Claiborne at three, the Browns taking Trent Richardson at four, and the Bucs going with Luke Kuechly. While if I were the Vikings, I would certainly draft Kalil, McShay's mock certainly is a possibility. The Rams have already traded back once, and are rumored to be interested in moving back again.

If Kalil is on the board, Mayhew should make the call inquiring about the sixth pick. Mayhew called Arizona at five last year when Patrick Peterson was still on the board, but the price ended up being to high. Atlanta gave up a boatload of picks to move up to six to draft Julio Jones last year. It will take a similar package to move up to six this year, however the Falcons had to move up from 27 last year, while the Lions only have to move up from 23.

Let's look at the points for the individual draft picks. Atlanta gave up two firsts, a second, and two fourths. Those points added up to 1,768 points, which is significantly higher than the 1,600 points the sixth pick is worth.

If the Rams really want to move from the sixth pick, they may take the 1,607 points the Lions can put together by offering their first round picks from this year and next year along with this year's fourth and fifth round picks. However, it's no guarantee that the Rams to accept that deal. However, if the Lions offered their first and third round picks in this and next year's drafts, they could ask for the Rams' first and fifth round picks. Those points would add up to 1,788 (when subtracting the points for the fifth), which is 20 more points than the Falcons gave the Browns.

So my question is, would you do either of these deals if Matt Kalil was available at six? I know I would, but I have a feeling that more than 50% of POD will vote no. Kalil can replace Gosder immediately, or possibly even Backus immediately. Kalil is supposed to be the best Tackle prospect since Jake Long, and he will be and upgrade wherever he goes.
