After closing our the 2012 NFL Draft and about to go through the longest 3 1/2 months of our lives; the biggest thing that has been talked about in Lion Nation since Megatron gracing the cover of Madden 13 was how Mr. Mayhew once again ignored the cries and the pleads of the Lions fans and drafted a position when we clearly needed help at so many other positions including CB. I may be one of a few who actually like the pick...
Mayhew makes no secret about about the way he does business. He has a system. During the draft he has his list of favorites and no matter what happens, he ignores the great temptation of reaching for a player and sticks to his list. We've also seen that he is a big fan of depth. Last year he drafted Nick Fairly when we all wanted Prince Amukamara and started to stock pile our DL. Why? Because you can never have too many DL to rotate in.
Mayhew did not draft wrong at all; all he did was make Matthew Stafford and our offense that much more dangerous. Last time I checked, Stafford had quite a season last year and in a few more years, be the most dangerous QB in the league (You all can quote me on that). Bottom Line; I think he drafted the best he possibly could with the picks he had to work with.
Mayhew already made his mark this year buy embracing his team. He even said he would not attack the FA market this year. He was more interested in the players he already had. First he made Calvin Johnson the highest paid non QB in the league. Then he gave Tulloch a five year contract and is trying to get Cliff Avril to stay long term. Jim Harbaugh showed last year the value of embracing your players. He told everyone before the season started that he had no interest in getting rid of Alex Smith and that he was perfectly happy with him... turns out Alex finally had the year he was expected to have in SF. Mayhew's strategy is already paying dividends as well. He had so many people restructure their contracts to create salary cap room just to resign his own players. If you were a player would you make that big of a sacrafice? In a 2 week span he cleared up something like 20 million dollars in cap space... unbelievable!
Call me crazy but I believe we might have some gems in this years draft. He drafted speed, hitting power and nothing but defense after Broyle. I can't wait to see these guys get their opportunities in the preseason; especially to see "The Hammer" knock the hell out of someone on the kickoff team... you know its going to happen!
I'm not on here to call out everyone who started complaining about the way Mayhew drafted, I'm just on here to show support because quite frankly he hasn't really ever given a Lions fan any reason not to trust him. He plays his cards conservative and close to his chest. He sets out his game plan and sticks to it; that's why we are turning around and are probably just one step away from being the most feared team in the NFL.
Just continue to trust in Mayhew boys, I know I do.
