Drew Brees Gets Five-Year, $100 Million Deal From Saints

Stay connected for news and updates

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is now the highest-paid player in the NFL. Brees and the Saints agreed to a new contract today, just days before the deadline for a long-term deal for players on the franchise tag. Here are the details on the contract, which will pay Brees $100 million over five years:

As pointed out by Pro Football Talk, the bar has been raised for other quarterbacks in the NFL. The likes of Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Eli Manning and the Detroit Lions' Matthew Stafford are likely to at some point get quite a pay raise in the wake of Brees' deal. It is a monster contract, but there's no doubting the worth of a franchise QB in today's NFL.

It will be interesting to see if any other players on the franchise tag get a long-term deal done before Monday's deadline. Cliff Avril is one of the players on the franchise tag without a long-term deal, and it'd be nice for him and the Lions to get something worked out.
