So we have less than 9 hours before we should get Cliff Avril signed to a long term deal or let him decide whether to sign the one year tender and play it out and hit the FA market next year. Avril wants the Lions to show him the money and the Lions don't think he is worth whatever he is asking. But if you look back, we had the exact situation in the past when other Lions were tagged. Both Jeff Backus and Cory Redding were tagged but signed up long term contracts just minutes before the deadline. The cliche is that this happened during the Millen regime.
The Lions have half their defense entering FA next year and most of them are key players or rotation players. They need to focus on getting them in the fold as well. While they don't believe Avril is worth what he is asking, the cap relief that signing him brings up will help signing at least a couple of up coming FA players from the team to long term as an inherent benefit.
What do you guys think will happen with Avril this year?
