A Little Love for Coach Schwartz

You don’t have to look to far to find a Lions fan who will tell you that Jim Schwartz is the best Lions coach in quite a while. Some may even tell you he is one of the best coaches in the NFL. I am here to tell you, he may be on track to be one of the best of all time. Now, of course it’s too early to crown Schwartz the best coach of all time, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking.

Jim Schwartz was faced with a task like nobody before him. He took control of a 0-16 lions team that was so depleted of talent, even the biggest of diehard Lions fans would ask “who” at some of the names on the roster. A total of 5 quarterbacks completed a pass in the abysmal 2008 season for the Lions. Even better yet, 3 quarterbacks had over 100 attempts. Some teams head into the season with less than 3 quarterbacks on their roster.

Being put in the perfect position for failure was no concern for Schwartz. In his first season he only managed 2 wins. While this was far from his expectations he understood to let the team celebrate when finally snapping there 19 game losing streak with a win over the Washington Redskins. After 3 seasons as the coach of the Detroit Lions Jim Schwartz was able to transform the 0-16 team from 2008 into the team we saw in 2011 that won 10 games and made their first playoff appearance since 1999.

Heading into the 2012 season Schwartz faces maybe the toughest challenge since first taking over the team. Turing the Lions from a 1 time playoff team to a perennial powerhouse in NFL. A Super Bowl this season is a lot to ask, but a playoff win or 2 would certainly push things in the right direction. While many pick the lions to miss the playoffs this year, Lions nation is faithful in Coach Schwartz and his team. With the young talent and a great coach at the helm, good times are ahead for this team.
