Lions Waive-Injured S Don Carey, TE Nathan Overbay

Don Carey #31 of the Detroit Lions runs during the game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

The Detroit Lions have waived-injured safety Don Carey and tight end Nathan Overbay. The moves were announced on Monday afternoon, but no corresponding moves have been announced just yet. As a result, it's not currently clear who will be taking their spots on the 90-man roster.

Both Carey and Overbay had been banged up as of late. Carey was actually getting some first-team reps at safety before he got hurt, but clearly he dropped down the depth chart while he was out. I'm not exactly sure what Overbay's injury is, but both him and Carey missed Monday's practice.

With Carey being waived-injured, guys like Sean Jones and Ricardo Silva are now squarely in the mix to make the 53-man roster at safety if the Lions keep five of them on the team. Considering Louis Delmas' status is up in the air so much right now, having five safeties for Week 1 of the regular season may not be a bad idea.
