I am new to POD but the other day I was thinking about what type of player could the Lions REALISTICALLY add at this point in camp who would actually be a quality player. As I thought about this I got more excited by my conclusion that I just had to share it with someone but I am out in California and don’t have any other Lions fans to talk to so I decided to join the POD community to bounce this idea off some knowledgeable fans. The first thing that I thought about was what position players would be able to contribute to right away. The answer clearly would be the secondary or at running back. The next would be that the player would have to have talent, which by extension, would mean he would have to be on a team and we would have to trade for him. So what sort of player with talent would a team want to trade…? Well someone in the dog house, probably someone who is on a team with a new head coach who doesn’t like him and a team with a dysfunctional front office. At this point I ran across this article and low and behold, Vontae Davis seems to fit perfectly, he is talented, in the dog house (as per Rotoworld) , has been downgraded to second team which shows they really mean some of that screaming and yelling they did at him on the first episode of Hardknocks, and well their front office isn’t all there.
Now I know what you are wondering if Davis is so good why is he getting demoted and why did he show up to camp fat? Well I cannot tell you that but I think all you have to do is look at the fact that without Davis in the lineup Miami’s D was terrible, with him in it, the D was awesome. (See the Grantland article I linked earlier) Not to mention in 11 games last year he had 4 int and 43 tackles, 39 of which were solo. This guy can play and has been a near Probowl talent his whole career.
Miami has also already shown willingness to trade quality player who they don’t think fits the team or the new head coach, see Brandon Marshall. On the other hand having something to trade is also important, I think draft picks could probably work. Guessing on what we would have to give up in the terms of draft picks would be futile at this point but I will do it any way and say he would probably at least demand Brandon Marshal type trade. Not to mention transitioning from a 3-4 to a 4-3 has to have left Miami with some sort of need on the DL. So overall this seems to be exactly the type of player/situation that Detroit could profit from.
So does that mean we can welcome Vontae Davis to the team in a few weeks? Hell no!!! I think there is a snowballs chance in hell this trade happens, primarily because I came up with it and I can’t remember the last time a trade I came up with happened other than in the Maddenverse. I should also mention that it is still early in training camp and Davis has plenty of time to turn it around and please his new coach. This does beg the question of if you guys can think of any other players out there who fit the bill?
As a side note on here I want to say that I also think that with the injury to Delmas I feel safety is a huge need now, but that if we could add a corner who can man up it would ease the load of the safeties and allow them to play more "in the box" or in Speivey’s case more man.
