Hey guys I've been reading and commenting on here for a few years now but this is my first FanPost so I apologize if I pull a Schiano and break some "unwritten etiquette laws" for posting.
I'm not too familiar with the X's and O's of football, and as much as I'd love to be, I find myself with a lack of time to really study the games. That being said, I noticed a difference in the two games that I watched this past weekend and I was curious to see if any of you could enlighten me as to why.
First game was obviously Lions vs. 49ers
Second game was Falcons vs. Broncos
I just had a question for you all regarding defensive schemes and disguising coverages.
I noticed in the Falcons vs. Broncos game that the Falcons were disguising coverages by all standing up within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage before Manning snapped the ball and when it was snapped certain guys would blitz and certain guys would drop back into coverage. Other snaps different guys would rush the QB and others would drop back and so on and you kind of get the idea.
At first I thought maybe the Falcons just ran a completely different kind of defense, but based on the little bit I found the schemes are pretty similar. Then I thought that maybe the Falcons had stronger personnel on Defense, but apart from the secondary I'd say we're equal if not better. It seemed to confuse the hell out of Peyton Manning and it seems likely to me that something that Peyton struggled with may give a lesser QB, like for instance Alex Smith a little more trouble than the boring 3-point stance and go when the QB says "hike" that I saw out of the Lions on Sunday night.
My questions to you guys are:
Why do you think the Lions don't do more of this?
Is it because our secondary is that much worse?
Do you think this might help the Lions D or should they stick to what they're doing and just get better DB's?
Didn't I hear something from Gunther about mixing it up with Suh a little more this year and is this what you expected when you heard that?
Thanks and sorry again if I this is too long or I messed something up formatting.
