The Detroit Lions and Social Media

Detroit Lions and Social Media link

The Detroit Lions have an underutilized Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram account.

The organization utilizes all three of these types of social networking often to show the fans what is going on in the Detroit Lion’s world. The Detroit Lions Social Media does not interact with their fans. The organization’s tweets are simply play by plays, advertisements, pictures of the team and games, interactions with sports analysts, information and retweets. They could do a better job with involving the fans, since as of this moment they do not do it at all.

The Detroit Lions organization does not comment back on Instagram or on Facebook and they do not tweet or retweet at all. Fans like to know that the organization has appreciation for them and their commitment to the team; therefore they should interact and show some level of love to them. The Lion’s social media makes it seem like they only care about ESPN and sports analyst’s opinions.

The types of promotions that the Lion’s social media uses are things such as: tweeting articles written ontheir website, showing the different community services they are doing in their community and promoting articles written by the Michigan paper called "M Live." Their Instagram and Facebook posts are virtually the same thing. One could assume they do this because not every Lion’s fan has an Instagram, but most people have a Facebook. Therefore, putting the same content on the Instagram and Facebook page is a missed opportunity to promote to a wider population without providing duplicate information.

The Detroit Lion’s social media usage does provide some good value to their fans. They keep their fans updated daily on what is going on with the Detroit Lions. It is also nice that they tweet a play by play of the games so that fans who are not able to watch the game still know what is going on. Another cool thing that the Detroit Lion’s social media does is show behind the scenes videos; for example the Lion’s in the tunnel before the game. Although they keep their fans informed on what is going on with their team, they miss the opportunity to interact with their fans and get them involved. Social Networking should also be a way the fans can interact with their favorite team. The Detroit Lions social media is therefore not currently providing the best possible fan experience.
