Here's a scary thought: if the Packers and Bears win next weekend, then the Lions have to win out to make the playoffs. Put another way: if the Lions lose tonight, we might be eliminated next weekend no matter what we do in the final two weeks.
At first glance, it may seem unlikely that the Bears and Packers will both win next week: the Bears play at the hungry Eagles and the Packers play at home against the resurgent Steelers. But it would be foolish to assume that the Packers or Bears will lose next week for 3 reasons. First, the Packers win yesterday confirms that anyone can win on any given day. Second, if Rodgers returns, the Packers can (and will) beat anyone. Third, the Eagles may be playing for absolutely nothing next week against the Bears -- if the Cowboys win against Washington at 1pm, then the night-time Eagles-Bears game will not mean anything for the Eagles because the winner of the week 17 Eagles v Cowboys game will win that division no matter what the Eagles do against the Bears. So if the Cowboys beat the Redskins, the Eagles could even rest their starters against the Bears.
Everybody says we need to treat this as a playoff game. That's great. I hope the players understand how true that is. If the Lions lose tonight, they may be done no matter what we do the rest of the year.
