Martin Mayhew to remain Lions general manager

USA TODAY Sports

Jim Schwartz is out, but Martin Mayhew is keeping his job as general manager of the Detroit Lions.

The Detroit Lions have fired head coach Jim Schwartz, but it does not appear that they are going to fire general manager Martin Mayhew as well. According to Jay Glazer, Mayhew is staying on as general manager of the Lions, which makes sense when you consider that a press conference has been called for 2 p.m. ET with Mayhew and Lions president Tom Lewand, who is also reportedly safe.

Throughout the past few weeks, as rumors swirled about Schwartz's future, there was never really much talk about Mayhew's status. This was an indication that a change in the front office was unlikely, although everything was really up in the air as of Monday morning. It wasn't clear if Schwartz would actually be fired, just as it wasn't clear if Mayhew would be retained.

Mayhew has certainly had his struggles as a general manager, and there are several draft picks that haven't worked out. However, his most recent draft class performed quite well this past season, and the Lions were also able to add a lot of talent via free agency and the undrafted free agent market. The thinking all along has been that the Lions have talent in place and simply need a new head coach to get the most out of their roster.

With Mayhew staying on board, he will get to hire his second head coach as general manager of the Lions. He originally hired Schwartz back in 2009, and now he's beginning his second coaching search.
