I know, I know, but please hear me out. I'm a huge fan of Matthew Stafford, but i worry about him becoming to complacent now that he has a fat long term contract. Quarter back is clearly the most important position on a football team by a large margin. We have one of the best back ups in the league in Shaun Hill, but he really is just there to win games if, and only if, Stafford gets hurt since he is so old. Kellen Moore, an un drafted free agent third string QB and is no threat.
What I am proposing is the Lions draft a QB in the third or fourth round of this years draft as a way to show Stafford, "hey, we have another option if you don't work hard and get the job done". I know Stafford is young and has tons of talent, but i think it would be worth the 3rd or 4th round pick to make sure our most important player stays motivated an working hard. I hope we never need to use this new QB, but it also gives the increased potential of hitting on the next Tom Brady. I mean, we do have one of the best supporting casts for a QB in the league right now, so I don't think it's too far fetched another QB could cone along and out perform Stafford.
