What we need most!

I wanted to contribute to the site that I visit on a regular basis as a long-time Lions fan and long-time PrideofDetroit lurker. Being the beginning of the off-season I find no better time to really discuss what we need moving forward. Before I begin I want to introduce myself. I grew up a Lions fan in South Carolina with my parents moving down here before I was born with the Air Force. I played football in high school and played one year in college before transferring to wrestle earning a scholarship after earning All-American honors on the club team level. After graduating I got into coaching with wrestling and football and have always been a complete football nut. I am currently a professional poker player and have been for the last several years and I am married with a 3 month old baby.

Now that we have that out of the way...

1) Leadership - Nothing is missing more from this team than this. You can't expect one or two people to carry the load but we need it more than ever with KVB gone. I'm not sure if he saw his time coming to an end towards the end of last season and decided to step back but it was obvious we are lacking so much in this category. None of our stars fit this role as it is simply out of character for them. I have a hard time believing that you can draft a rookie and expect them to fill this role when they get here so for that reason this needs to be addressed in Free Agency and hopefully on both sides of the ball. It wouldn't hurt if the coaches would try to help here either.

2) Discipline - With Leadership comes disipline. So getting the first step corrected will go a long way with regards to player discipline. Part of the problem has revolved around who we have decided to bring in. The coaches really need to be held responsible in this category most and holding the players accountable for their actions (please no 2012 off-season this year!).

3) Make the BIG move - This won't be sexy but I do think a huge issue we have revolves around out top draft picks before the rookie wage scale was put into place. We simply are paying too much money to our top players and that ends up handcuffing us on the back end all over the field. This will help bring in better depth across the board. We would be able to be bigger players in free agency year in and year out. The problem we have right now is that we are simply a slave to our big three. What I would suggest specifically is to move CJ. I like him a ton, I wear his jersey, but moving him and gaining tremendous value in the process could lead to more wins in the future so this is what I would like to see most.

So now is your chance. Do you agree? Thanks for reading and being so awesome POD!
