George Wilson signs with Titans, not Lions

Mark Konezny-US PRESSWIRE

Safety George Wilson has decided to sign with the Tennessee Titans rather than the Detroit Lions.

Shortly after he was released by the Buffalo Bills earlier this month, safety George Wilson drew interest from both the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans. Last week, he visited both teams, and he signed with the Titans on Friday. He got a two-year deal worth $4 million (with incentives that could make it $5 million), according to Ian Rapoport.

Assuming the Lions offered him a contract, this is disappointing to hear. Wilson isn't exactly young, but he would have been a solid veteran addition to the locker room and the safety position. The Lions are in need of additional depth and an upgrade in talent at safety, and he could have been someone who comes in and starts for a season or two.

What this means going forward for the Lions is that they will have to continue to look at ways to improve the safety position. The draft is obviously an option, but the real question now revolves around whether or not the Lions will re-sign safeties Louis Delmas and Amari Spievey. Even if both return, additional depth is needed because of their injury issues, but now it looks like the next step is for the Lions to decide their fate.
