I thought that might get your attention. Here's the plan.......
Shaun Hill is set to make $2.4million this year with a cap hit of $3.25million. Teams like Arizona are reportedly showing interest in guys like Matt Cassell. San Francisco now has Scott Tolzien as it's primary backup to Colin Kaepernick after the trade yesterday. I think Shaun Hill would be preferred to either of those guys. To start in Arizona or be a veteran backup in SF.
So not only do you save the cap space but you might also be looking at a 3rd or 4th round draft pick in return (especially from SF who will probably have 15 picks this year). Now the only reason this comes up is because Matthew Stafford has shown the last two seasons that he can stay healthy so having Shaun Hill on the bench is pretty much a luxury. Now before you think I am talking about Kellen Moore as the backup, there is a guy named Drew Stanton listed as an UFA. Knows the system......Local boy......won some games on some horrible Lions teams....would be very cheap. Oh, and very good friends with #9 and the lovely Kelly B Hall (twitter).
Shaun has been great over the years but the extra cap room could be used to sign someone who can be a gameday contributor, not an insurance policy. In reality, if Matthew goes down with a long term injury, the season is probably gone anyway but Drew has shown he can keep the ship afloat for a few games at a time.
Am I nuts thinking about this?
