Lions agree to two-year deal with Louis Delmas

USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions have agreed to a two-year deal with safety Louis Delmas.

Safety Louis Delmas is staying in Detroit after all. The free agent visited both the St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers this week, but he has agreed to a two-year deal worth $9.465 million with the Detroit Lions, according to Pro Football Talk.

The Lions actually offered Delmas a new deal last week, but he decided to test free agency rather than immediately accept it. As part of testing free agency, he visited the Rams and 49ers. It looked like the Rams were going to sign him, but he left for San Francisco. Now, he's headed back to Detroit for the next two seasons.

This is another nice move by the Lions when it comes to their secondary. They re-signed cornerback Chris Houston and added free-agent safety Glover Quin earlier in the week, and now they have Delmas back for the next two seasons. If he can stay healthy, we could actually see the safety position turn into a strength for the Lions, especially with guys like Don Carey, Amari Spievey and Ricardo Silva potentially being around to provide extra depth.

As for the contract itself, two years seems like a good deal for both sides. Delmas hasn't been able to stay healthy, so he will have a chance to prove himself on a short deal. For the Lions, this isn't a long-term risk, and the secondary is really starting to take shape.
