Lions free agency: Antoine Cason agrees to deal with Cardinals

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Cornerback Antoine Cason, who was believed to be drawing interest from the Detroit Lions, has agreed to a deal with the Arizona Cardinals.

During the NFL free agency negotiating period last weekend, the Detroit Lions reportedly made contact with the reps of cornerback Antoine Cason. At the time, Cason was believed to be a potential backup plan in case the Lions were unable to re-sign Chris Houston. Earlier this week, the Lions did re-sign Houston, and Cason landed a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals on Friday.

Since the Lions were able to bring back Houston, I can't imagine signing someone like Cason is a huge priority right now. They still have a need for a No. 2 cornerback, and adding a starting-caliber player at that position through free agency would be nice. However, the Lions may be content to let the draft play out before making any additional moves at cornerback. They have several young guys who could potentially start, and don't sleep on Ron Bartell, either.

It's true that the value of free-agent cornerbacks is quite low right now, but the Lions' main concern should be with building some depth at a position like defensive end. If the season started next week, for example, the Lions would be able to field a competent secondary, especially with them signing Glover Quin and re-signing Louis Delmas. However, defensive end is not in good shape with only Jason Jones, Willie Young and Ronnell Lewis. If they're going to go out and sign a veteran defender who can start, he should be a defensive end rather than a cornerback.
