Ok, it is late game. The dreaded goobers we are playing today just scored a TD to pull within 3. We took the touch-back and proceeded to go 3 and out (FML). Out trotts Nick sphincter clinching Harris and his league worst 41.5 yard average and 26th rated net punting. His longest punt of the year was 58 yards (ranked 33 in the league). A typical (Please, please!!! Please!!!! Mother @#%#@#) punt from him and the other team is starting around their 40 and feeling pretty damn good after just scoring on their last drive. They only need roughly 30 yards to get into field goal range. As a Lions fan, you know the rest of this story.
I am of the opinion that a punter, if he is a field flipping weapon, very well could be worth a 4th round pick. The longest punt in the league last year was 79 yards. That is over 20 yards longer than Harris' longest punt!!! In the above scenario, an extra 10+ yards could be the difference between a win or a loss. I know kickers of all sorts are considered best found in free agency but I am not buying it. If that were true, why are we still forced to field Harris? How many games have we watched as the other team's punter crushes a punt and completely flips the field giving his team the advantage in field position. I am of the opinion that Harris was a huge part of our troubles last year and an upgrade is desperately needed.
So, the question stands. If you were the GM, where would you find your punter?
