Lions free agency: All is quiet on the Lawrence Jackson front

USA TODAY Sports

There don't appear to be any developments in negotiations between the Detroit Lions and defensive end Lawrence Jackson.

The Detroit Lions have entered the phase of free agency where their main priority is re-signing some of their own players and looking for bargains on the open market. With the major signings out of the way, the focus has shifted, and the thinking has been that the Lions will now work on re-signing guys like kicker Jason Hanson and defensive end Lawrence Jackson.

We know that the Lions have made an attempt to re-sign Hanson, but negotiations aren't progressing right now. The same could be said about the situation with Jackson, as there has been no news on where things stand with him. Jackson himself indicated on Twitter on Monday that there haven't been any developments when it comes to a new deal with the Lions.

The Lions have been connected to defensive ends like Osi Umenyiora and Elvis Dumervil, but neither player even ended up visiting Detroit before landing with a new team (Atlanta Falcons for Umenyiora and Baltimore Ravens for Dumervil). Given that the Lions only have Jason Jones, Willie Young and Ronnell Lewis at defensive end, you would think re-signing Jackson would be a priority. That doesn't appear to be the case, though. Perhaps the Lions are just planning to go in another direction, or perhaps they are simply waiting for the draft to play out before making a decision one way or another on Jackson (assuming he doesn't sign elsewhere before then).
