Boy, it really makes you wonder.
With so many free agents available that could potentially help the Lions (Reggie Bush and Andy Levitre, to name a few) and so many free agents they have of their own, it's going to be really interesting to see what this roster looks like come September 1st. Will Mayhew try to keep a lot of his own guys? Will he want to pursue talent elsewhere? After finishing 4-12 in 2012 and coming to the conclusion that maybe the Lions talent was overrated in comparison to their NFC North counterpart Green Bay, in which the Lions are 1-7 against them since 09'.
Now, it's not to say that the Lions don't have talent. In fact, they have a franchise quarterback who can make any throw required when he's on, the best wide receiver in the game, and a couple all-pro caliber defensive tackles. The problem is that Martin Mayhew hasn't hit on his middle to late round picks and has traded away too many for anyone's liking. Granted, he did do a lot of trades involving late round picks to acquire guys like Chris Houston, Tony Scheffler, and Corey Williams, but that's not the same thing. He has missed quite a few good players in the process, like in 2011 when he picked Titus Young when Randall Cobb was still there in the second.
With this being such an important year for both Mayhew and Jim Schwartz, you have to wonder, maybe even expect, Mayhew to make a blockbuster deal(s). I'm not saying overpay for any one player, or trade for Darrelle Revis, but make enough moves in free agency to where the draft will be easy to decide. If there is still a ton of holes at key positions heading into the draft, I would worry the sense of urgency would make them reach for need, like the safe pick, as opposed to BPA for a position of need, like they should do. I believe we need the best players available at every position to be able to compete year in and year out in the NFL.
So, I'm curious to hear if any of you Lions fans can make a guess on who Mayhew is targeting. Do you think he has any tricks up his sleeve, or do you think he's clueless?
