Lions host Tavon Austin, two others for pre-draft visits

USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions wrapped up their pre-draft visits on Wednesday by bringing in West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin and two other players.

The Detroit Lions used their final three pre-draft visits on Wednesday by bringing in West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin, Florida State linebacker Vince Williams and Appalachian State running back Steven Miller. These three visits brought the Lions to 30 in total in advance of the 2013 NFL Draft, which begins a week from Thursday.

Austin is obviously the biggest name from Wednesday's group of players who visited. He is expected to be a first-round pick, and he is considered one of the biggest playmakers in this year's draft. At West Virginia, Austin put up big numbers as a receiver and a running back. In 2012, for example, he rushed for 643 yards and 3 touchdowns and had 1,289 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns.

Conventional thinking suggests that Austin isn't in the mix for the No. 5 overall pick. However, if the Lions were to trade down into the teens, Austin is someone who would likely be considered, so the team is covering all possible angles by taking a closer look at him.
