It's long been the general consensus that Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher are the top two tackles in this class, and Lane Johnson of Oklahoma comes in third somewhere.
There are some strongly positive reviews of Johnson (even if they rank Johnson a little below Joeckel and Fisher), like this one by Charlie Campbell:
There is no doubt that Johnson is a rare athlete. He is as fast as a tight end and is just scratching the surface of his potential. Johnson has light, quick feet to get depth in his drop and negate speed rushes. His phenomenal agility lets him glide with pass-rushers, while speed-rushers get frustrated with his ability to mirror. Johnson is also quick to react and negate rushes to the inside. Entering the NFL, Johnson is a legitimate pass-protector.
But there is also the view that there are some significant parts of Johnson's game that are lacking, and you don't see those problems with the top tackles Fisher and Joeckel, as Jeff Risdon notes here:
1. Everyone wants to hype up Oklahoma tackle Lane Johnson, but my notes are not as charitable on the greenhorn tackle. There is no doubt he is athletic, but his technique is rawer and he is more vulnerable to getting beaten than it seems most would like to admit. The tools are there but the toolbox is not yet organized or complete. I noted in three different games, viewed at different times, that he struggles with rushers lined up tight and keeps his outside foot artificially deep, leaving him very vulnerable to having defenders cross his face. He is going in the top 12 but he is not nearly as NFL-ready at left tackle as Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher. Some fan base is going to find that out the hard way, I suspect.
I just wanted to gauge the opinions of my PoD brethren on how much better Fisher is than Johnson for the Lions.
I know the Lions can go a lot of ways in this draft, but suppose Joeckel goes to the Chiefs and the Lions can do one of two things:
1. Draft Eric Fisher
2. Trade down, draft Lane Johnson, and pick up more draft capital in later rounds.
How much draft value would it take for you to be happy to trade down and get Johnson if they could have had Fisher? At what point would you be disappointed?
