Is Mayhew drafting like his job isn't on the line?

A lot of people suspected that Mayhew's job was on the line this year, I'm one of them. However, the way he's drafting this year has me kind of questioning that. He's taking guys that will need to develop, which tells me he's thinking more long term.

I'm a big fan of the Ansah pick, but I'm not going to pretend that he's going to go out there and dominate day 1. He has more upside than any other player there at 5 though, he could very easily be a DPOTY candidate in 2 or 3 years. This was a long term pick for sure.

Then in round 2, he takes Darius Slay. What I'm hearing about him is that he's gifted, but he needs time to develop. Slay also has a torn meniscus, not sure how much recovery period there is for that. This was another long term pick.

Warford is a guy that should be a day 1 starter, the only "safe" pick he's made thus far.

Am I crazy or is there some merit to this thought?
