These are the LBs currently on the team:
|47||Messina, Carmen||LB||6-2||236||24||1||New Mexico|
|55||Tulloch, Stephen||LB||5-11||240||28||8||North Carolina State|
Obviously, Tulloch (MLB) and Levy (OLB) are penciled in as starters. The only linebacker we drafted was Brandon Hepburn, in the seventh round. Hepburn will be fighting just to make the team as a special teamer. This leaves us with a group of four guys that can fill the remaining starting LB slot. They are Lewis (7th rounder), Messina (UDFA), Whitehead (early 5th rounder), and Palmer (lifelong special teamer/backup).
I think the favorite is Whitehead. The staff apparently saw enough in him to move up early in the fifth round to select him last year. Lewis could be a lot faster now that he is healthy and is listed much lower than his combine weight, which was close to 250. Messina, I've heard people say some positive stuff about him but I don't have any info on him. Palmer has filled in over the past couple of years when one of our starters went down. He is 27, so I don't see him making some great leap in his development . I think he would be an average starter from what we've seen, but there isn't a lot of room for him to grow.
I can't think of any worthwhile LBs still sitting in free agency at this point. I know this will be sorted through camps and pre-season, but what is your prediction for now?
