Darius Slay spent rookie minicamp learning from Gunther Cunningham

Detroit Lions cornerback Darius Slay couldn't participate in the team's rookie minicamp, but he still benefited from it.

Detroit Lions cornerback Darius Slay wasn't able to take part in the team's rookie minicamp over the weekend because he's recovering from knee surgery. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz admitted that Slay isn't missing much by not being on the field, and Schwartz stressed the importance of Slay being healthy down the road.

Even though he wasn't able to be involved in the action on the field, the minicamp wasn't a complete waste for Slay thanks to defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham. Slay had a chance to pick Cunningham's brain, and he picked up some useful knowledge while meeting with him during the minicamp. From MLive:

"Basically, it's like a private tutor, teaching me a little something, teaching me a lot of football, seeing where my head was at, giving me mental reps," said Slay. "It was a valuable time. I'm here to make the defense better, so that's what I'm trying to do."

Slay isn't expected to take part in the Lions' upcoming OTAs, but it's possible he could be back in time for the mandatory minicamp in June. If not, Slay should definitely be 100 percent healthy by the time training camp rolls around in the summer.
