Josh Cribbs signs with Raiders, not Lions

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

The Oakland Raiders have landed Josh Cribbs, who had drawn interest from the Detroit Lions.

The Detroit Lions are going to have to continue their search for a new return man, because Josh Cribbs has signed with the Oakland Raiders. Cribbs visited the Lions earlier this week, and he said that they were "high" on his list of teams. After taking a couple days to think things over, though, he decided to join the Raiders.

The New York Jets and New York Giants were also in contention for Cribbs' services, although it doesn't sound like the Jets made him an offer. Jets general manager John Idzik said that Cribbs isn't "quite there yet" in his recovery from a knee injury, although I suppose that could have just been an excuse for why Cribbs picked another team.

In any case, the Lions will have to look elsewhere to upgrade their return units. At this point, they may just decide to go with someone already on the team. There are a number of players on the team capable of returning kicks and punts, but clearly the Lions liked the idea of bringing in a proven player like Cribbs.

With Cribbs no longer an option, perhaps the Lions will now turn their attention to adding a veteran offensive tackle or defensive end to bolster their depth at those positions. They have a limited amount of cap space, but they do still have some room with Cribbs signing elsewhere.
