Lions undrafted free agents: LaAdrian Waddle scouting report

Michael C. Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

A look at Detroit Lions undrafted free agent LaAdrian Waddle and what he brings to the table.

Our scouting report series continues with the Detroit Lions' 2013 undrafted free agents. Next up is LaAdrian Waddle.

OT LaAdrian Waddle (Texas Tech) - UDFA

After being named to numerous All-Big 12 teams following his senior season at Texas Tech, offensive tackle LaAdrian Waddle joined the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent. Waddle enters the NFL with plenty of starting experience, as he made 38 consecutive starts (and 40 overall) as he closed out his career at Texas Tech.

Random fact

Waddle took a pre-draft visit with the Lions on April 15.

What the experts are saying

NFL.com:

Height and extreme length are prototypical for the tackle position, and his foot quickness when in balance makes it very difficult for even the best sack-masters to get the corner. Thick arms that portend his upper-body strength, and also owns enough flexibility and girth in his lower half to anchor against bull rushes. Occasionally asked to go out to linebackers, shows agility to fit onto the block and uses his long arms to shield them from the play – though he can be out-quicked by second-level defenders and doesn’t always sustain. His strength and quickness helps him as a zone run blocker, as well.

Outlook for 2013

Waddle seems like one of the undrafted free agents with a real shot at making the 53-man roster. After Riley Reiff, Jason Fox and Corey Hilliard, there is a spot open at offensive tackle. If Waddle has a strong training camp and preseason, he could easily make the team as the final backup at the position. At the very least, he should be in the mix for a spot on the practice squad.
