Lions work out Winston Justice, Antoine Caldwell

Rob Carr

The Detroit Lions worked out two free-agent offensive linemen this week.

It turns out that offensive tackle Winston Justice didn't take a free-agent visit with the Detroit Lions. Instead, he was in town this week to work out for the team, as was free-agent offensive guard/center Antoine Caldwell, according to Aaron Wilson. This suggests that the Lions were kicking the tires on Justice (and Caldwell) rather than actively looking to sign him.

Justice is looking for a new team after starting in 12 games for the Indianapolis Colts last season. He ended up in Indy after spending six years with the Philadelphia Eagles. He fits the profile of someone who could serve as veteran depth at offensive tackle for the Lions, which is one of the main needs they have to fill going forward. He also could potentially compete for the starting job at right tackle if he were to sign.

Caldwell could potentially fill that same role for the Lions, just in the interior of the offensive line. A third-round pick out of Alabama in 2009, Caldwell's first four years in the NFL were all with the Houston Texans. He made six starts for Houston last season, and he has 19 career starts.

The Lions are expected to start Dominic Raiola at center and Larry Warford at right guard, and Bill Nagy and Rodney Austin will be competing at both spots as well. Perhaps the Lions could sign Caldwell as added competition at those two spots and as extra insurance in case somebody gets hurt.
