1st time to the D - looking for advice

After seeing the Lions play in Arizona, Seattle, New Orleans I have finally decided its time to visit Detroit and catch a game this season. I have never been so to Detroit so in past I generally would stay at a hotel close to the stadium as I would come in on a Friday night and leave Monday morning.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a cheaper, safe and decent hotel to stay in down in the area of Ford Field and Comerica? Staying at the MotorCity Casino and big places down there get pricey.

I am coming by myself (leaving the wife and boy at home) so I can do as much as I can in a short period of time. Anythings you would suggest a must do? I understand its dependant on time of year as well. I am between three games, home opener to Minnesota Sept 8, Chicago at the end of Sept or the Monday night game in December against Baltimore.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
