On Doug Farrar's most recent Shutdown Corner Podcast, Greg Cosell of NFL Films and respected media scouting ace dropped that bomb on all the pro-Banks fans out there. Doug Farrar also agreed.
These guys are watching film all day long during the off-season and are respected by their industry colleagues so you can rest assured that they have at least some idea of what they're speaking about.
Cosell compared some of Slay's qualities to how Champ Bailey plays as a mirror press man corner. He also said when Slay was asked to play physical that he showed the ability to do that too. And he topped off his praise saying Slay "has a chance to be a really good starting NFL corner."
In a previous podcast, they basically didn't like Banks for the ways he would get beat at times, slower change of direction, and ability to play one type of style it seems. They like him a bit better, scheme wise, going to Tampa because playing opposite Darrelle Revis will take pressure off him. But, they were wondering if he might just be limited to being successful as a slot corner in certain sub-packages.
This doesn't set in stone that Slay will be better than Banks or any other rookie CB for that matter. However, it does show that there are scouts who agree with the Slay over Banks assessment. Hopefully, those who were uneasy over the Lions draft pick over his college teammate feel a bit better, even if they don't agree.
With their other assessments of the Lions' draft picks, Cosell & Farrar both liked the potential of Ansah, both were sure to note his rare athletic abilities for a man his size, & of course they compared him to Jason Pierre Paul; they both liked Warford's butt kicking ability & said he had deceptive athleticism; they both focused on Devin Taylor's "height-weight-speed" profile while noting his lack of snap but flashes of ability & relative flexiblity and wondered if he could developed into a Calais Campbell type of DE, who he compares to somewhat; Cosell thought Corey Fuller is an "intriguing player", who is pretty fluid, with length & straight line quickness/speed, and could develop into either an outside or slot receiver; Theo Riddick was said to have a good mix of power & natural wiggle who has a good chance to make the team since he fits the team scheme well.
