Lions release OG Bill Nagy

Elsa

The Detroit Lions have released offensive guard Bill Nagy.

The Detroit Lions got their roster back to 90 players on Wednesday by signing wide receiver Chaz Schilens. On Thursday, the roster went back down to 89 players when the Lions released offensive guard Bill Nagy.

Nagy originally joined the Lions last August. He was waived by the Dallas Cowboys, which were planning to put him on injured reserve following ankle surgery. The Lions decided to claim him off waivers, and they essentially planned to store him on their roster and later IR while he recovered from the surgery.

When the Lions made the move, the thinking was that Nagy would someday compete for a starting spot at offensive guard or center. The problem is that he just wasn't able to get healthy. I expected him to start training camp on the PUP list, but the Lions instead elected to simply move on by releasing him.

With Nagy out of the picture, guys like Rodney Austin, Leroy Harris, Dylan Gandy and Jake Scott will be the main competitors for the two backup spots at offensive guard and center.
