FanPost

Alright guys. It's time we had a talk.

I started reading this site some time in 2008 (maybe '09, can't remember). It was really nice to be able to see so many Lions related posts in one spot and be able to keep up to date on current events. More importantly though, I loved reading the various posts and comments from you guys, my peers and fellow fans. People had their disagreements, but mostly it was a family setting, somewhere where we could go to huddle amongst ourselves and talk about all things Lions without facing the ridicule of the rest of the football world. I loved it. I had to join (years later, but better late than never).

As of late, the atmosphere on PoD has been... cancerous would probably be an apt way to describe it. Whenever anyone expresses an opinion that follows one school of thought, somebody else voices dissent, and what once would have been a well thought out debate has recently turned into childish, petty name calling. Personally, I've hit my threshold. Enough is enough.

Look, I don't know how many Schwartz apologists there are or how many Schwartz decriers there are, and frankly, I don't care. Everyone reading this right now has 3 things in common; we're all Lions fans, we're all decent (I hope, at least) human beings, and we all want nothing more than to see our team win. I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong, but if someone disagrees with you, whether directly or otherwise, is it necessary to resort to insults? To completely undermine someone's way of thinking? To squabble with a fellow fan? We used to be better than all that, guys. What the hell happened?

I guess I needed to just get this off of my chest more than anything, because as of right now I don't know where I'm going with this. I think that we as adults should be able to respect one another's opinions without becoming irate or aggressive towards each other. Some of you think Schwartz has done a good job so far given the team that he inherited and that he deserves his shot to right the ship. Some of you think he hasn't done enough to merit his continued employment. Some of you think we're going 10-6 this year, playoff bound. Some of you think we'll be lucky to break 5 wins. And guess what? It's all ok. It's ok to think either of those things. If you see someone else say we're hitting 10 wins, why do you have to attack them and undermine their intelligence because they're optimistic? If someone says we're hitting 4-5 wins, why do you have to insult their character and question their loyalty to the team? Nobody should have the right to tell someone how to be a fan of their team, positive, negative, or neutral.

Let's end it here, guys. Hug it out. Rather than promoting dissent and anger through the fan base, let's try to respect one another and get back to where we used to be: a tight knit group of fans who love the Lions.

I really used to enjoy coming here every day to read various posts and comments. Used to. Lately it just stresses me out and gives me a headache, but I'd like to think that if we could all take a step back from the keyboard and take a deep breath before posting, our community, our little family here, could be awesome again. As Bill once said: Be excellent to each other.
