Montell Owens injury: Lions RB doesn't have long-term injury

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Montell Owens surprisingly doesn't have a long-term injury.

When Detroit Lions running back Montell Owens went down without being touched on Thursday night, my first thought was that he tore his ACL. Non-contact knee injuries usually don't turn out well, and considering Owens was on crutches after the game, it was tough not to fear the worst.

As it turns out, Owens' injury is not actually going to be a long-term thing, according to head coach Jim Schwartz. It's unclear what exactly happened, and there isn't a timetable for him to return. However, Schwartz said on Saturday that there aren't any long-term injuries, so that's good.

It's also good that Owens was walking without a big limp following Saturday's practice.

Again, it's not known just how long Owens will be out, but it looks like the Lions dodged a bullet here. Owens is expected to be a big-time contributor on special teams and play quite a bit on offense as well, so it's good that he didn't suffer a long-term injury.
