NFL roster cuts: Lions release Terrence Austin

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions are now down to 77 players.

The Detroit Lions have released another player. Wide receiver Terrence Austin has been let go, according to Dave Birkett, meaning the Lions now have 77 players left on their roster. Two more must go before Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline.

Austin joined the Lions at the beginning of 2013 on a futures contract. He seemingly had a solid training camp and at least got himself in the mix for a roster spot, but he was still on the outside looking in. The Lions decided to release him as a result.

This move leaves Patrick Edwards, Matt Willis, Corey Fuller, Micheal Spurlock and Kris Durham for one or two spots at wide receiver. Edwards is the heavy favorite to land the No. 4 spot at wide receiver, and if the Lions do decide to keep a fifth player at this position, it could go to Willis or Spurlock for their contributions on special teams. If the Lions don't keep five wide receivers, chances are it'll be because they want to keep four tight ends.
