The Detroit Lions have released yet another former draft pick. The latest to be let go is safety Amari Spievey, according to Dave Birkett.
Spievey joined the Lions back in 2010 as a third-round draft pick. The Lions moved him from cornerback to safety, and he started nine games in his rookie season. He went on to start 15 games in 2011, and he suffered a concussion in the Lions' playoff game that season. He suffered another concussion in 2012, and that one actually ended his season after only five games.
Spievey was a clear backup going into 2013 after the Lions added Glover Quin at safety in the offseason. Now he's off the roster altogether. This is a good sign for Tyrell Johnson, who is hoping to make the 53-man roster as the final safety on the team. It's also a sign that the Lions feel comfortable with Rashean Mathis, who can play both cornerback and safety.
The Lions are down to 64 players, meaning only 11 more moves need to be made to get down to the 53-player limit.
