NFL roster cuts: Lions release Steven Miller, Jake Scott

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions have released running back Steven Miller and offensive lineman Jake Scott. Follow all of the Lions' moves as they get down to 53 players with our roster cuts tracker.

The Detroit Lions' cut-down continues, as running back Steven Miller and offensive guard Jake Scott were just released, according to Dave Birkett (twice).

Miller joined the Lions back in April as an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State. His only real hope of making the 53-man roster involved him winning the Lions' return job, but that clearly did not happen. Miller flashed his speed and elusiveness, especially as a running back on Thursday night (he had 72 yards rushing on 12 carries), but he wasn't able to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

Miller does seem to have a good shot at making the Lions' practice squad. He has potential, and I'm sure the Lions would like to have a backup plan on the practice squad when it comes to the return job. If nobody on the team is effective as the returner, perhaps Miller will get his shot at being on the 53-man roster later in the year.

Scott joined the Lions around the same time as Leroy Harris back in June. He was brought on board to bolster the Lions' depth at offensive guard, and he looked pretty good the last couple weeks of the preseason. It wasn't enough for him to make the team, though, as the Lions have decided to go in a different direction with the interior of the offensive line.

The Lions are now down to 59 players on the roster, meaning just six cuts are left to go.
