Lions roster cuts: Three defensive lineman released

USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions finished the last of their cuts with three defensive linemen: Jimmy Saddler-McQueen, Ogemdi Nwagbuo and Andre Fluellen.

The Detroit Lions have finished their final round of cuts by releasing Jimmy Saddler-McQueen, Ogemdi Nwagbuo and Andre Fluellen, according to Tim Twentyman.

Saddler-McQueen joined the Lions during the 2012 season as a member of the practice squad. Because of injuries, the Lions added Saddler-McQueen to their roster at the very end of the season, and he was brought back to compete for the final spot at defensive tackle this year. Until the Lions signed Justin Bannan, Saddler-McQueen looked like he may be on his way to making the 53-man roster, but the addition of Bannan changed that. There just wasn't room for Saddler-McQueen, but perhaps he will end up on the practice squad again.

Fluellen's third stint with the Lions is now over. He re-signed with the Lions just as training camp was opening back in July. This came after he spent some time with the Chicago Bears earlier in the offseason, and it came after he was let go by the Lions during the final round of cuts last year before being brought back for the final few games of 2012. Fluellen had a real shot at making the team before the Lions added Bannan, but that move pretty much made it known that Fluellen was going to be released again.

Nwagbuo, a former Michigan State Spartan, returned to Michigan at the end of last season to provide extra depth at defensive tackle for the Lions after injuries piled up. This year, he had his sights set on making the Lions' 53-man roster as their fourth defensive tackle, but again, the addition of Bannan pretty much ended that particular competition.

The Lions now have their final 53-man roster, but there are likely to be a few more shake-ups before opening day.
