Possible trade scenarios that are reasonable and that I'd like to see happen this season, but I doubt would actually occur for the Lions

Many fans have been talking about trading Pettigrew and/or Scheffler to the Patriots for a few months now, but I honestly doubt that they have any assets the Lions would want outside of future draft picks in return. Even then, with both TEs contracts expiring after this year, the draft picks we'd get in return would be 6th or 7th rounders even more so because of the drops/fumbles issues that 'Grew and the Scheff' have. Plus we'd weaken our TE situation by doing that.

But if I was Martin Mayhew, the two players I'd want to trade most right now are probably Pettigrew and Chris Houston. Yeah, that's right - Chris Houston. Houston is an above average CB but his biggest flaw continues to be his ball awareness when the ball is in the air and he's forced to turn his hips & run in step with the WR he is defending. Houston has probably regressed even further in that area this year, as he showed against Jerome Simpson in Week 1. Well when you have to face Larry Fitzgerald in Week 2, you're going to be facing an upgrade in WR talent that's probably going to target that weakness in Houston even further. I think it'd be better to get rid of Houston now, before his talent regresses further due to age in the future, even though we signed him to an extension this past offseason.

So what I'd do if I was the Lions & Martin Mayhew is get on the phone with the Bengals or the Ravens in maybe week 5 and propose the following offers:

  • To the Bengals: I'd ask for TE Jermaine Gresham & CB Dre Kirkpatrick for Pettigrew, Houston, and up to one-3rd round draft pick in the future. They'd down grade at TE a bit, but could sign Grew to a cheaper extension, they'd upgrade at CB and not have to worry about developing Kirkpatrick anymore (since they don't seem to really want to), and also get a draft pick in return. I still believe Kirkpatrick has 1st round talent potential, as he plays deep passes pretty well. His problem has been his lack of development due to injury last year & veterans ahead of him on the depth chart already knowing the Bengals' system; plus, committing knuckle-headed penalties at times. Veteran DBs like Delmas, Quin, & Mathis plus the Lions coaches could possibly speed up his development & mentor him. It could be a buyer's market on these guys.
  • To the Ravens: I'd ask for TE Dallas Clark,CB Jimmy Smith, & maybe a conditional future 5th-round draft pick for Pettigrew & Houston. In this case, the Ravens would receive an upgrade in both TE & CB at the moment, plus a possible future draft pick. The Lions would get a savvy veteran TE stop-gap in Clark who can still catch some balls and block while he mentors/leads Fauria & Scheffler. The Lions could end up drafting another TE in the 1st to 4th round range next year and let that guy develop while still having Fauria & Mike Williams for the 2014-2015 season. Jimmy Smith has definitely flashed 1st round CB talent throughout his short career, but he's another player that is down the Ravens depth chart a bit. I feel like the Lions coaches & veteran DBs could end up having him play very well in our system before week 11, when we really need him.

I think this would be a good idea, but it would just require a bit of patience from the Lions. I think our TE situation would improve any way you look at it in the long run, whether we get a Gresham or take Clark for a year & draft a TE high next year. The CB we'd get in return from either potential trade would learn from trial by fire and I think their length and athleticism would fair well later in the season in the Lions defensive scheme.
Let me know what you all think of this and other potential trade scenarios you dream of before the NFL trade deadline in the comments.
