Jim Caldwell says footwork is key for Matthew Stafford

Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

Jim Caldwell is planning to focus on footwork when it comes to working with Matthew Stafford.

Footwork was one of the biggest reasons behind Matthew Stafford's struggles in 2013. Jeremy Reisman examined how poor footwork contributed to Stafford's overall lack of accuracy, and really this issue was nothing new. Stafford's footwork has always been inconsistent, and it's really a much bigger concern going forward than his side-arm delivery.

With that in mind, it's good to hear that new Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell is planning to work on footwork with Stafford. After reviewing all of Stafford's throws from the 2013 season and meeting with Stafford during his interview, Caldwell recently told SI's Peter King this:

"We have used a set of drills in coaching over the years that I think has added some consistency to all the quarterbacks we’ve coached. The great majority of poor throws—people look at the arm, and that’s important obviously, but I think footwork is the key. I can pull up any gamefilm and show you how our footwork drills help you. In a nutshell, the feet and eyes work together. If I’m throwing in a particular direction, my footwork is pointing in the same direction—directly at the target. We’ll work on it with Matthew, and he will do them flawlessly."

Throughout the Lions' coaching search, many people said that the top priority for the new head coach would be to "fix" Stafford. Clearly, Caldwell has a plan to make Stafford better, and the fact that the previous regime didn't do enough to fix Stafford's footwork is a big reason why a coaching change was made in the first place. Hearing that Caldwell already has drills in mind for Stafford to work on his footwork is extremely promising.
