Brian Billick not expecting to hear from Lions about head coaching job

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Don't expect Brian Billick to be a candidate for the Detroit Lions' head coaching job.

Pretty much whenever an NFL head coaching job opens up, various coaches turned broadcasters are mentioned as potential candidates. With the Detroit Lions, for example, there has been a lot of talk about NBC's Tony Dungy, who isn't interested in returning to coaching despite thinking quite highly of the Lions' job. There has also been some talk about CBS' Bill Cowher and ESPN's Jon Gruden, although like Dungy, neither coach appears to be interested in leaving TV.

One coach turned broadcaster who isn't seemingly mentioned quite as often is Brian Billick, and he may actually be the most likely to return to coaching. Billick has been an announcer for FOX since he was fired by the Baltimore Ravens after the 2007 season, but he recently told MLive that he would listen to the Lions if they expressed interest in him. He doesn't expect that to happen, though.

"You never say never, but I've kind of reached the point where I recognize where the league is at right now," Billick said. "I'm happy to be where I'm at and I don't anticipate going back into coaching."

Per MLive, Billick hasn't actually heard from any NFL team with a coaching vacancy this offseason. That seems to be an indication that his chances of landing another NFL head coaching job aren't very good at this point in time. That's a bit surprising considering he has won a Super Bowl and went 80-64 as a head coach in Baltimore, but he just doesn't seem to be as highly regarded as Dungy, Cowher and Gruden.
