Lions coaching rumors: Detroit 'in play' for Bob Stoops?

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sport

Could Oklahoma's Bob Stoops be an option for the Detroit Lions?

Fresh off a big win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, might Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops be headed to the NFL? He didn't exactly have much to say when he was recently asked about all of the NFL rumors that have been mentioning him as a possible head coaching candidate, but it looks like a couple teams might be considering him as an option.

The Cleveland Browns have been mentioned most often as a potential landing spot in the NFL for Stoops, but now the Detroit Lions are joining the rumor mill as well.

Stoops has been Oklahoma's head coach since 1999, and he doesn't have any NFL experience. With the Sooners, he's amassed a record of 160-39, and he just completed an 11-2 season. He's now won at least 10 games in each of his last four seasons at Oklahoma, and he's won four out of his last five bowl games.

As of right now, the Lions have only interviewed Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell for their head coaching job, and really only NFL guys have been mentioned as potential candidates. I suppose you never say never, but would the Lions really take a chance on a guy like Stoops over a former NFL head coach like Caldwell or Ken Whisenhunt? I personally don't see it happening.
