Defense could be the deciding factor for picking our Head Coach.....

Lions know their focus is on offense. Making Stafford elite is goal one with any coaching staff, but deciding factor when choosing a head coach could be...... What will happen to our defense?

For the past 5 years the Lions have built a decent defense around the 4-3 scheme, and while it would be easier to transition to a Tampa 2 or non wide-9 4-3, then we may need to seriously hope that the Lions get Jim Caldwell, Jay Gruden, or Mike Zimmer. If we got Ken Whisenhunt as our head coach, then we would need to get serious in the offseason for 3-4 MLB's, and 3-4 OLB's in the Draft/Free Agency. Sure certain players would be good to switch, Ndamukong Suh as 3-4 DE, Ziggy Ansah as a 3-4 OLB, possibly Nick Fairley at Nose Tackle, but we just put so much into the 4-3 defensive front that switching could cause some major problems for the team.

Transitioning isn't difficult if the right coordinator can get through to the players, but that's not always a given. I don't know if Ken Whisenhunt will continue with his 3-4 defensive track record or if he will adopt a new defensive philosophy rooted in the 4-3. Defense shouldn't be in the forefront of our head coaching search, but it should be a consideration for our future in Detroit.
